Rudas leads Lao-Kendall net winners (from Manila Bulletin Online)

Marinel Rudas survived the gritty challenge of Akiko De Guzman, 7-5, 6-4, yesterday to advance into the second round of the La’o-Kendall Women’s Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Rudas will next face another big challenge in sixth seed Jessica Marie Agra who earned a first round bye.

While Rudas found stiff opposition in advancing to the next round, top 14 yeard and under campaigner Shannine Mae Olivarez scooted past July Javelosa, 6-1, 6-0.

Olivarez will next meet fourth seed Bien Zoleta, who also drew a first round bye.

Also winning their opening matches were Tamitha Nguyen, who made short work of J.V. Custodio, 6-1, 6-3, and Allysa Callejo, who easily thumped Bea Fabregas, 6-2, 6-0.

Particia Joy Orteza and Jennylyn Magpayo also made their presence felt by chalking up victories over Fushima Katsumi, 6-3, 6-0, and Joy Yuen, 6-2, 6-3, respectively.

Orteza and Magpayo will have their hands full when they meet top seed Michelle Pang and eighth seed Maria Regina Santiago, respectively, in the next round.

Samantha Coyiuto and Angel Wegman, on the other hand, stormed to the next round via a walkover against Lis Magaway and Kitkat Zobel, respectively.

Coyiuto will next face fifth seed Trudy Gine Amoranto while Wegman will next lock horns with second seed Bambi Zoleta.

Zoleta rallies to win title

Teenager Bambi Zoleta came back from a first set loss to stun top pick Michelle Pang, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, and claim the LaO-Kendall Women’s Tennis Championship title at the Rizal Memorial Tennis center yesterday.

The second-seeded Zoleta, the top campaigner in the juniors’ 16 years and under division, came through with a tentative start, found her rhythm in the second frame and then bucked cramps in the deciding set to pocket the P7,000 top purse and 100 Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) ranking points.

It was Zoleta’s second women’s singles title this year. She won the Lucena Open a few months ago.

"Inisip ko na lang yung points na makukuha ko para maipanalo yung match," said Zoleta, a native of Lucena City.

Trailing, 3-4, in the third set, worked behind her forehand broke Pang’s serve in the eighth game and then held her own to grab a 5-4 lead before fighting off cramps in the 10th game where she borke Pang anew, sealing the win with a backhand winner.

"Masakit na talaga. Inisip ko na lang, isa na lang, panalo na ako," Zoleta said.

En route to the finals, Zoleta, who drew a first round bye, thumped Angela Wegman, 6-3, 6-1, in the round-of-16; brought down Ma. Regina Santiago, 6-4, 2-6, in the quarterfinals; and then bumped off third pick Aileen Rogan, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.

Pang settled for the P4,000 runner-up purse and 60 ranking points.

korek ka sir Addie i've watched them last sunday right after clinic and i can say that they have potentials to be good wta players someday if,they will train hard, and have pinas beauty too.. magaganda at magagaling... very refreshing, ang ganda nilang panuorin, astig.. sana may mag train sa kanila abroad...
