UNSEEDED THAI teenager Varatchaya Wongteanchai marched into the quarterfinals of the ,000 Holcim-ITF Women’s Circuit 1 after posting a 6-2, 6-3 upset win over No. 2 Filipino Czarina Mae Arevalo yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center hardcourt.

The 17-year-old Wongteanchai bucked a listless start as she rallied from a 0-2 deficit to win the first set – big thanks to his solid backhand that produced numerous winners.

It was a breeze for the Thai in the second set as she raced to a 4-1 lead. She wrapped up the match in one hour and 26 minutes.

"I had expected a tough match because she’s the No. 2 seed. But I guess she wasn’t in her best form today," said Wongteanchai, who needed three hours the other day to beat her second round rival.

"This is my first time to play in this tournament and I hope to do well," said Wongteanchai, already a proud winner of two ITF Juniors singles and three doubles titles and two ITF Women’s doubles titles the last two years.

Up next for Wongteachai is unseeded Filipino-American Stacey Tan, who eliminated American and sixth seed Biffy Kaufman, 6-7 (68), 6-1, 6-1.

"I tried not to think about the pressure. I just played my best out there and I’m glad I won," said the US-born Tan, whose parents are both Filipinos. She was runner-up in the ,000 event in Missouri two months ago.

As expected, top seed and defending champion Venise Chan Wing Yau of Hong Kong made it to the next round with nary a trouble as she hacked out a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Korean Lyoo Suh Hee Sun.

The world’s No. 477 Chan will meet unseeded Thai Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, who stunned fifth seed Taiwanese Kao ShaoYuan, 6-4, 6-1.

Fourth seed Korean Han Sung-Hee defeated compatriot Kim Jung-Eun, 7-5, 6-0, while unseeded Thai Varanya Vijuksanaboon defeated seventh seed Lam Po Kuen of Hong Kong, 6-2, 6-1 to also earn quarterfinal berths in this tournament sponsored by the ITF Grand Slam Development Fund, Wilson balls, Century Park Hotel and the Philippine Sports Commission.
