Basically we have natural and synthetic. Natural offers comfort, feel, control, power etc but very expensive. Very good tension maintenance. Synthetics can be divided to three, nylon, poly and kevlar. nylon is closest to natural, poly is more durable but stiffer and does not maitain tension well, kevlar the original tough string but very stiff. Aside from material, construction is another factor. mono, single wrap, dual wrap and multi. Gauge is the string size, higher guage the thinner. better playability but less durable
