THE mood is upbeat among the country’s tennis bets in the Doha Asian Games.

The six-man squad, led by Fil-Americans Cecil Mamiit and Eric Taino, are either training or competing abroad in preparation for the December Games where they are expected to gain higher seedings, according to a tennis official.

Mamiit, the world No. 181, should be in the Top 8 of the men’s singles, said Philippine Tennis Association executive vice-president Ajay Pathak.

“We have a good feeling about our campaign in the Asian Games,” said Pathak. “Our players are in top condition. The goal is to make the quarterfinals and after that anything can happen.”

Fresh off his $50,000 Challenger title win in New Orleans, Mamiit will be at the forefront of the team which is embarking on a mission to end the country’s 40-year medal drought.

He and Taino are now in the thick of competitions in the United States, said Pathak. Six-foot PJ Tierro is also seeing action in US tournaments.

Johnny Arcilla, who completes the RP Davis Cup team along with Mamiit, Taino (ranked 340th) and Tierro, is honing his skills in local meets; while Denise Dy and Czarina Mae Arevalo are competing in and out of the country.

The last time the Philippines won an Asiad medal was in Bangkok in 1966, when the country bagged two silvers courtesy of Patricia Yngayo and Desideria Ampon in women’s doubles and Federico Deyro and Yngayo in mixed doubles.

Mamiit & co. should perform well dahil gayon lang tayo ulit nag represent ng tennis sa asian games dahil bumagsak ang level ng tennis natin. Our Aseans counterpart should respect us once again as a top contender in asia. Ipagtayo ang bandila ng Pilipino.Mabuhay!!!

saw the tailend of the match between srichaphan and chela wherein the former retired from their game trailing 3-6 0-3, kala ko injured or something... was kinda jumping for joy kasi kala ko he'll be sidelined for the asian games kaso di pala injury and it has to do with his sinus  Huh

Dreamer, Sad to say bagsak pa rin ang tennis sa Pilipinas. Malayo pa rin tayo sa atin Asian counterparts. Superficial lang ang improvement natin due to our Fil- Am brothers. If it weren't for the them group three pa rin tayo sa Davis Cup. Our current top juniorKyle Dandan and Barte are hovering in the 200s or lower? Girls are even worse, remove Denise Dy and Anja Peters and we are really down there. Philta should address this. The recent success of Mamiit and Taino are just masking the problems although I support and commend them for representing Philippines. We need to nurture our locals and support Philippine tennis and not rely on overseas talent alone.

You are right, sir! The philta has no program for tennis. They don't have any Ideas of how to improve and grow tennis in the Phil. They should have a grassroots program in order to produce good players. I started contributing my own little way for tennis back in my province when I quit here (Japan) I'll do my own program for seek of tennis.

I also commend this website. Truly a support to Philippine tennis. I guess this is the only window to Philippine tennis right now and probably the website that unifies Pinoy tenistas globally.

Tennis enthusiasts, please check the thread on the "Goodwill Tennis Tours" by Elmer Dolera.  He will be here in the Philippines this November to educate aspiring tennis coaches and advanced players to teach the game of tennis.  He will be coming with USPTR coaches from the U.S.  This is open to everyone.
