Was at Ynares Sports Complex in Pasig and got to see some of the Asian Players in the 14 and under.  There are some good players but I think our players will be able to hold their own against them i.e. Bambi Zoleta, Sara Lim, Reggie Santiago, etc.  Let us pray for all of them.

Ferrer gains Asian U-14 quarters

The Philippine Star 10/12/2006

Seventh seed Filipino Jose Lorenzo Ferrer rallied past unranked compatriot Kim Ivor Saraza, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, yesterday to reach the boys’ singles quarterfinals in the Asian 14-Under Series at the Ynares Socio-Cultural Sports Center outdoor courts in Pasig City.

After losing the second set and trailing 2-3 in the third set, Ferrer won three straight games to get the upperhand at 5-3. Saraza made it 4-5 with a break on the ninth game but Ferrer broke him back on the next game to wrap up the match after two hours.

Ferrer set up a meeting against second seed Korean Kim Ki-Hoon, who breezed past Filipino compatriot Kyle Cordero, 6-0, 6-1.

Top seed Filipino Francis Casey Alcantara outclassed Paul Nicole Magaway, 6-1, 6-1, and sixth seed compatriot Akio Sy downed Japanese Takamasa Takizawa, 6-2, 6-1, while No. 3 Nuttorn Tanchainant of Thailand outplayed Filipino Marco Suntay, 6-3, 6-3, to also earn quarterfinal berths in this tournament sponsored by the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. and Wilson balls.

Alcantara will next play No. 5 Korean Jeong Joo-Wook, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Japanese Rikuto Furuta, Sy will face No. 4 Korean Noh Sang-Woo, who scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Filipino Roman Floreza, while Tanchainant will meet unseeded Rayadi Surya of Indonesia, who ousted No. 8 Korean Yoon Sun-Hong, 6-0, 6-1.

In the girls’ singles, top seed Filipino Noelle Nikki Zoleta blasted compatriot Enah Baba, 6-0, 6-0, to advance in the quarters against sixth seed Japanese Fumika Kumagai, a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Filipino Mary Grace Rivero.

I think she defaulted.  She was supposed to play Enah Baba.  Enah then played against top seed Bambi Zoleta.

Ferrer stuns second-seeded Korean

Santiago, Zoleta reach girl’s last four

Inquirer

Published on Page A30 of the October 13, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

SEVENTH SEED Filipino Jose Lorenzo Ferrer pulled off a 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 (7-4) upset win over the second-ranked South Korean Kim Ki-hoon yesterday to reach the boys’ singles semifinals of the Asian 14-Under Series at the Ynares Socio-Cultural Sports Center courts in Pasig City.

The 13-year-old Ferrer, a Grade 7 student at Xavier School, showed his determination to win by coming back strong in the third set, where he adjusted well to Kim’s net game and changed the pace of the rallies to force the tiebreaker.

Ferrer fell to 1-4 in the tiebreaker after missing two easy volleys but quickly regained his form to win the next six points.

Ferrer, the country’s No. 2 player in 14-under play, arranged a clash with third seed Nuttorn Tanchainant of Thailand, who scored a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Indonesian Rayadi Surya.

Nuttorn will go into the game with a psychological edge. He defeated Ferrer, 6-4, 6-4, in the Kuala Lumpur leg of the Asian 14-under Series last August, won the Bangladesh stop and settled for runner-up honors in Japan.

In other matches, top-seeded Francis Casey Alcantara blasted fifth seed Korean Jeong Joo-wook, 6-0, 6-0, to advance against fourth-ranked Korean Noh Sang-woo.

Noh showed the door to sixth seed Filipino Akio Sy, 6-4, 6-1.

In the girls’ singles, unseeded Filipino Ma. Regina Santiago eliminated No. 4 Malaysian Adelle Chia-Yan, 7-6 (7-6), 6-0, to join top-seeded compatriot Noelle Nikki Zoleta in the semifinal round of this tournament sponsored by the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. and Wilson balls.

Santiago will face second seed Korean Han Na-lee, who beat Filipino Sarah Jane Lim, 7-5, 6-1, while Zoleta, a 6-0, 6-3 winner over No. 6 Japanese Fumika Kumagai, will meet third seed Korean Lee Se-won, who prevailed over No. 5 Malaysian Huey Ting Sia, 6-3, 6-2.

SoKor netter ousts top local Alcantara

FOURTH SEED Korean Noh Sang-Woo bucked a lethargic start to pull off a stunning 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win over top seed Filipino Francis Casey Alcantara yesterday and advance into the finals of the Asian 14-Under Series at the Ynares Socio-Cultural Sports Center outdoor court in Pasig City.

The 14-year-old native of Ansung City used a variety of shots to beat Alcantara, who was visibly weakened due to various illnesses – stomach upset in the second set and leg cramps in the third set.

"I made him run in the first two sets while I just tried to hit the ball well. He was very tired in the third set," said Noh, who also saw action in four previous legs of the Asian 14-Under Series before coming to the Philippines.

In the finals, Noh, ranked No. 9 back home, battles third seed Thai Nuttorn Tanchainant, who completed the annihilation of local bets in the boys singles division by outsteadying seventh seed Jose Lorenzo Ferrer, 6-4, 3-6, 63.

Tanchainant, Thailand’s top 14-under player, is slightly favored having beaten No, 7-6, 6-2, in the finals of the Bangladesh leg. Noh captured the second leg title over compatriot Kim Ki-Hoon.

"It was a tough match in the semis and I hope to play better in the finals. I think I can beat Noh again because claycourt is my favorite surface," said Tanchainant, who was a runner-up in the Japan leg.

In the girls’ singles, top seed Filipino Noelle Nikki Zoleta defeated third seed Korean Lee Se-Won, 6-0, 64, to cruise into the finals of this tournament sponsored by the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. and Wilson balls.

Zoleta, who competed in the World Juniors Championships in Indonesia last May, will face second seed Korean Han Na-Lee, who rallied past unseeded Ma. Regina Santiago, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

In the boys’ doubles, top seed Koreans Kim KiHoon and Noh Sang-Woo downed Japanese pair Takamasa Takizawa and Rikuto Furuta, 6-0, 6-3, to advance in the semifinals against third seeds Roman Floreza and Alcantara, 6-1, 6-3 winners over Indonesians Rayadi Surya and David Wilson.

Other winners were second seeds Akio Sy and Tanchainant over Filipino pair Kyle Cordero and Kim Ivor Saraza, 6-1, 61, and fourth seeds Leander Lazaro and Korean Jeong Joo-Wook, 6-2, 6-4.

Booking semifinal berths in the girls doubles were top seeds Han Na-Lee and Lee Se-Won of Korea, second seeds Huey Teng Sia and Adelle Boey of Malaysia, fourth seeds Sarah Jane Lim and Noelle Zoleta of the Philippines, and the unseeded pair Jessica May of Brunei and Kaori Yamazaki of Japan. —Jean MALANUM

Zoleta trips Korean in Asian 14-U

The Philippine Star 10/15/2006

Top seed Filipino Noelle Nikki Zoleta rallied past second seed Korean Han Na-Lae, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, yesterday to capture the Asian 14-Under Series girls’ singles title for the third straight year at the Ynares Socio-Cultural Sports Center outdoor court in Pasig City .

After losing the second set due to errors, Zoleta regained her form and raced to a 5-0 lead in the third set. Han, who earlier suffered leg cramps, took the next three games at 3-5 but Zoleta broke her opponent’s serve on the eighth game to win the match.

"She (Han) improved on her game in the second set, making good placement shots while I wasn’t returning the ball well. Good thing, I was able to come back and control the third set," said the 14-year-old Zoleta, who competed in the World Junior Championships in Indonesia early this year.

Banking on her solid forehand, Han came up with successive winners to take a 5-1 lead in the second set. Zoleta managed to win the next two games at 3-5 before the Korean held her serve to win the set and tie the score at 1-set all.

Fourth seed Noh Sang-Woo of South Korea defeated third seed Nuttorn Tanchainant of Thailand , 6-0, 6-0, to pocket the boys’ singles title in this tournament sponsored by the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. and Wilson balls.

Alcantara should have a proper training and more hardwork to compete in a tough situation para hindi mag cramps.
Congrats to Noelle Zoleta! There's a lot more trophies ahead to be collected, Noelle! Mabuhay!
