The Overhead Smash by Roger Federer

« on: January 04, 2012, 06:43:05 PM »

I see pros do it like Fish and Roddick, but not Nadal and Federer.

What is it really?  Does it really help?

I think it helps as it releases the tension and goes to power. Please correct me if i'm wrong...

I guess it is just natural and logical. It is very difficulat to power your shot during inhalation stage.  Sobra lang pag may sound gaya ni Sha, Aza, and others.

May the force be with you. Pag sumisigaw ka maslumalakas ung power mo kasi parang pinipilit mo ung sarili mo na maglabas ng power up to its limit.
May the force be with you.

Sanay ba kayong gawin to?  How do you think we can make part of our swing motion?  Practice lang siguro talaga no? hehe

Hi Mordecai,
Agree ako kay Lito, yung grunting ni Nadal is an example of breathing out as he hits the ball.  Si Fed maaaring hindi natin naririnig but I am pretty sure nagbi-breath out siya.  Breathing out as you hit the ball is a good breathing habit.  Holding the breath, some called it "bad breath" interferes in one's court performance. The longer and powerful the breath, the better you'll control your breathing.  Mafe-feel mo na as if you are attacking the ball with your breath.

Exhalation should be slow, forceful and deliberate.  Breath out to hit crisp and accurate shots.  Try to say "yesss" as you hit the ball.  I find this breathing pattern very helpful to steady my shots.

parang i read it somewhere before that exhaling relaxes your muscle making your stroke more fluid. Try mo lang when you inhale exhale di ba para kang na rerelax pag nag exhale ka?

I think no other player demonstrates the relaxing part of exhaling more then Gustavo Kuerten.  You can see it on youtube.  His "ummm-haaahhhh" is relaxing even for the spectators Smiley

Francesca Schiavone (French Open '10 women's champ) is a little unusual.  In her serve, she grunts when she starts her motion, BEFORE the racquet hits the ball.  But then in her groundstrokes, she often lets out a "Heeeeehhh!" way AFTER she hits the ball, often when the ball has crossed the net.  Other times she would let the sound out WHEN she hits the ball.  Huh

Sounds good guys, thanks! I'm trying to make this a habit now at every shot, kasi normally I think I just quietly hold my breath at every shot.  But I did notice that it kind of helps with my concentration.  Maybe its psychological, since I have to mentally remember to breathe out so I am not worrying about my shot or anything else kaya mas maganda ang resulta.
