Mamiit ends ATP slump

SOUTHEAST ASIAN GAMES hero Cecil Mamiit is out of a slump.

The unseeded Mamiit took New Orleans by storm when he won the ATP Challengers $50,000 tournament recently, capping his romp with a 6-3, 7-6 upset of No. 1 seed Amer Delic of the United States 6-3, 7-6 (1) in the singles finals.

So overpowering was Mamiit, the SEAG singles gold medalist, that the Fil-American won his first ATP event of 2006 without losing a set.

Mamiit shocked No. 3 seed Michael Russel in the first round, Swiss Davis Cupper Ivo Heuberger in the second round, Dutch Fred Hemmes in the quarterfinals and American Eric Nunez in the semis before bundling out Delic -- all in straight sets -- to pocket the $7,200 (about P360,000) first prize and 50 ATP entry points.

Mamiit combined with American Sam Warburg to score a 7-6, 6-1 win over Chris Drake and David Martin of the US in the doubles final.

Mamiit, whose career victims include Andre Agassi and Michael Chang, will be leading the 2006 Asian Games campaign in Doha in December.

Mamiit moves up 41 positions to No. 181 in the ATP rankings with the win. Jong Arcano
