Patrombon takes shot at pro circuit By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated April 06, 2011 12:00 AM http://www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=673521&publicationSubCategoryId=69MANILA, Philippines - Top Filipino junior netter Jeson Patrombon takes a plunge into the pro circuit when he competes in three $10,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures events in India beginning next week. Patrombon, ranked No. 10 among the world’s junior campaigners, has been granted a wild card in the main draw of the first leg set April 11-16 in Chandigarh, marking his debut in the men’s circuit. The ITF Futures is the lowest rung of the men’s professional tennis ladder. The 18-year-old Iligan pride has also secured slots in the qualifying rounds of the second and third legs slated April 18-23 in Noida and April 25-30 in Chennai, respectively. Patrombon’s coach Manny Tecson said Patrombon gained his tickets to India owing to his Top 10 ranking in the ITF juniors list and three successive finals appearance in the last ITF Grade 1 circuit. Philippine Tennis Association vice president and ITF juniors committee member Ajay Pathak helped facilitate Patrombon’s request to the Indian Tennis Association. “We’re looking forward to these tournaments and we hope to get our first few (ATP) points there,” said Tecson, whose ward needs ATP points to gain entry to succeeding ITF Futures events. Patrombon will be pitting skills with 31 opponents carrying ATP rankings ranging from 448th to 1,700th. “Being a 32-man draw, the competition will not be as tough as a 64-man draw but what’s important is we test the water,” said Tecson. If Patrombon will dish out a solid performance in India, Tecson said they will try to enter him in three other ITF Futures netfests in Korea next. Still eligible in the juniors until yearend, Patrombon plans to compete at the Wimbledon juniors’ wars in between his forays into the men’s circuit.

Napakagandang balita naman nito! Good luck Team Patrombon, we will pray for your success. Always remember na ang success ay hindi lang sa pagpanalo, but also getting the results and experiences you need that would propel you to the next level.
Also, thanks to Philta. I am sure na marami na ring naitulong ang Philta and hoping na tuloy tuloy na ang commitment at tulong ng Philta para maiangat naman ang mga top juniors natin.

Tough draw for Jesson... he will take on 2nd seed Yuki Bhambri of India. Yuki is a former Junior No. 1 and a Junior grandslam singles champion.

Oo nga, we'll just hope for the best for team Patrombon. The good news is, that jeson just had 3 consecutive finals finish in 3 grade 1 tournaments where along the way he beat good players with pro circuits experiences. Another good news is, that Patrombon played doubles with Bhambri in the Youth Olympic Games, so most probably ay alam na ng kanyang team kung ano ang gagawin.
btw. i just saw a glimpse of bhambri in a tv show doing fitness training with fernando verdasco administered by the famed gil reyes, probably because bhambri is now part of the adidas team.
best of luck jeson!

Jesson lost 0-6;1-6. Frankly I did'nt expect him to beat Yuki but I did'nt expect him to lose by this scoreline either. Hopefully, he gets a better result in the second leg. But judging by this match it seems that he still has a long way to go (hope I am wrong).

That was a bad loss. ATP is really tough. Some top junior players before are nowhere to be found. I'm sure he'll learn from this experience.

A lot of world top juniors are actually in US colleges, too. Their not even in the top of their schools or division,...Nino is actually only number 3 or 4 in the singles lineup at Fresno State. I know a player Federico Browne, a World number 1 ITF junior player for the most weeks hovered only in ATP 600. Kyle Dandan is actually doing well.He plays no.1 in a tough conference. This kid should also be considered in the National team. Mahirap talaga sabihin who'll breakout sa ATP, before a high junior ranking can be a strong indicator, in the past 10 years hindi na. Sampras,Agassi, Nadal,Querrey, Isner and a lot more did not play much ITF juniors at all. Mga top US and European juniors are playing less ITF juniors and mixing it more with Sattelites and Challengers. And it also depends where you play your futures, kung Asia, kahit Australia lang, wala din. Kailangan patayan yan sa Europe and America and start em younger like 14,15,16 years old. By 17, kailangan seasoned na yan sa futures.

Scary, but it should be a blessing in disguise for Jeson. While some if not most of the time that the score will not reflect on how good or bad a player is performing, a loss is a loss. And even if you are that close to winning, in the end of the day, it’s the win that counts. But if the score really suggested on how Jeson will fare against guys who are regulars in the futures then it’s scary, especially against Bhambri, who himself while already winning some future titles and have been toiling for a while in the futures events is still about to make a mark on the challengers (1-9 in challengers).
The good news is, with this result they were able to realize that they need to work harder or even need to change their strategy or approach on their training, fitness and mind conditioning (train like a pro, think like a pro and play like a pro) to be able to break through. If it happened otherwise, then I don’t know.
Anyway, you can never judge or accurately predict the future success or failure of a tennis player by just looking at 1, 2 or 3 matches or even a year of playing in the futures events. We all know, just like a tennis racquet, a small tweak on their weight or weight distribution or type of strings and tensions, it can tremendously change its performance (or changing the racquet itself). With a tennis player, a small boost of confidence here and there, change of strategies and finding its rhythm, you will be amazed on how they can become a changed tennis player.
0-6, 1-6? Remember, just before Rafael Nadal, currently the king of clay was dealt with the biggest upset in 2009, losing to Robin Soderling in French Open 2009 and probably his biggest loss so far (as he have the chance for history to break the tie with Borg for 4 consecutive French Open title that would help him on his bid to become the greatest clay court player of all time), he beat Robin Soderling in the same round of 16 in an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Rome (clay) in a humiliating 6-1, 6-0. If I am not mistaken, it was Soderling who first serve in the first set and hold for 1-0 lead and then Nadal just trashed him, winning the next 12 games.
You’ll just never know.

I spoke with an international/european coach, he is from Sweden btw, at the recent ITF tournament in Manila (mitsubishi).
According to him the womens juniors are better than the mens juniors compared to top Mens and womens. Juniors ranked 10-20 in the world are not better than top 1500 among Men. Whereas girls ranked around 40 can compare to womens 200-300.
Another point: basically there is no professional ATP player top 130 that have not trained 10.000 hours. Most top 130 among men are 22 years o r more with a handful exceptions.

And my conclusion is: for Jeson to reach his full potential he needs to train and compete for another 4 years, around 6 hours a day. (can he arrange funding for that?)
How much does he train today? He looked to me when i saw him at Rizal stadium, having a very weak upper body. Did he do any weights?
Second, his serve is a big weakness: very low stance, low toss, not much power....maybe 160-170 km /hour. And too many unforced errors, especially forehand. Rarely he could keep the rallies more than 5 shots. I don't know if it is technique issue or mental....

Patrombon, Indian partner barge into doubles quarterfinals The Manila Times EMIL C. NOGUERA Wednesday, April 27, 2011 http://www.manilatimes.net/sports/patrombon-indian-partner-barge-into-doubles-quarterfinals/FILIPINO Jeson Patrombon made his presence felt in the doubles event of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Men’s Futures in Chennai, India. Patrombon connived with Indian partner Arjun Kadhe in ousting Laurent-Olivier Daxhelet of Belgium and Akash Wagh of India, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7, to advance to the quarterfinals of the $10,000 tournament. “Jeson will also earn his first ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) points in doubles after this win. We came here to India to test the waters in the Professional Men’s Circuit and as I have expected it will be rough sailing at first for Jeson,” explained coach Manny Tecson. Patrombon and Kadhe will have their hands full anew as they tackle the second-seeded tandem of Junn Mitsuhashi of Japan and Christopher Rungkat of Indonesia,, 6-1 winner over Elwin Antony and Neeraj Elangovan of India. “Jeson is very pumped up for the singles match and I told him the key to winning is to manage the big points well and to stay focused all through out the match,” added Tecson.

Jeson is now ranked 1,521 in the world which makes him officially No. 4 in the Philippines behind, Huey, Gonzales and Mamiit.
It seems he will forgo the junior clay tournaments this May and will instead play in futures events in Indonesia.

Yes he is in the qualifying draw for the upcoming Indonesia Futures. Strange he was not in the current one..... maybe because his ATP ranking points from India was not booked at the time of entry.
Really pity he didnt join Roland Garros Juniors. All the top juniors are there, except for him.
Is it money issue or gambling with ranking points? As for money, in Paris hotel and accommodation is free. Not the case in Indonesia. Ok travel is more expensive but all in all not big difference I think......strange is it

My take, I don't see it sayang as Jeson chose a futures event over Roland Garros. Playing juniors or being on top of it doesn't really prove anything when you play in the pro circuit. I can really see that Jeson is serious to try to make it in the pro at least for a couple of years.

sa tingin ko meron monetary considerations jan. sa pro, makapasok k lng sa main draw - mern ka na $$$. sa juniors- mern din ba? it's a privilege to play in a grand slam w/out those qualifying rds. To top it all, he can go deep in the draw. sayang pa rin, last year na niya ito sa juniors. sa pro naman, la age limit hanggang kaya.

i just feel it would be very good for filipinne junior tennis if he tried and succeeded in jr grandslams and then finished his last junior year like top 5 or top 3. That would be fantastic. It is already great we have a top ten, many mention that all over the country....
And what doors could that open, such as training free at Bollettieri a few months, or agent contracts for sponsorship deals and so fort. And wild cards to ITF futures for ranking points. And he might even win! A life time achievement.

Either way, I'm pretty sure Jeson and his handlers are doing what they think is the right thing to do. Until they release a statement explaining why they did what they did all we can do is speculate.
Also, it doesn't matter which course he takes. If he is successful all those "doors" will open for him and he doesn't even have to seek them. They will come to him.
