Upsets at Hilado age group tennis

Mark Escares shocked boys’ 12 years and under fifth seed Brysl Libao, 6-4, 6-1, in the upset-marred round yesterday of the Luis Hilado Memorial Age-Group Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Escares, who won by default over Carl Abadilla in the opening round, arranged a quarterfinals date with fourth pick Kyle Parpan, who survived a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win over Albert Lim Jr.

Unseeded Julian Dayrit also shone with a stunning 6-4, 6-1 victory over seventh seed Elijah Arevalo in the unisex 10-under class for a quarters meeting with Lim, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Grigory Kutsnetsov.

Mimo Tomacruz also spelled the difference and shocked No. 8 Erika Manduriao, 6-1, 6-1, to face second-seeded Libao, who crushed Ariel Frencillo, 6-2, 6-0, in the other second round match.

Other seeded netters bannered by girls’ 14-under third pick Samantha Coyiuto resumed their dominance in the event supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and Dunlop.

Coyiuto blanked Maxine Mella, 6-0, 6-0, to arrange a quarters match against unseeded Monika Bañez, who won by default over Akiko De Guzman.

Girls’ 12-under third seed Crista Santiago walloped Fatima Burahan, 6-0, 6-2, to collide with Rachelle De Guzman, another winner by default over Aiko Parlasigan.

Topseed Argilance Cañizares and No. 3 Joachim Samson struggled with hard-earned victories to advance in the boys’ 12-under quarters.

Cañizares bounced back from a first set loss to defeat Joshua Cano, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 while Samson escaped past Bruce Ivan Valenzuela, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3.

Cañizares faces the winner between Jose Nicolas Cano and Ernesto Jose Gatdula while Samson tangles with Jeremiah Latorre, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Joel Atienza.

Atienza bounced back in the 10-unisex division where he is seeded sixth and trounced Joseph Saraza, 6-2, 6-1, to arrange a quarters meeting with topseed Eric Olivarez, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Rafael Teng.

Third seed Maia Balce whipped Carl Abadilla, 6-0, 6-0, to clash with Alec Joseph Rivero, who won over default against fifth pick Neil Puche.

Underdogs romp in Hilado netfest

Upsets continued to hound the Luis Hilado Memorial Age-Group Tennis Championships yesterday as a slew of unheralded campaigners bumped off favored rivals to gain semifinals seats at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Heralded JV Custodio, Kim Polero, Ellen Dominguez and Rachelle De Guzman downed their fancied foes yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the Luis Hilado Memorial Age Group Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

JV Custodio started the ball rolling for the upset axe welders when she booted out girls’ 18 years and under fourth seed July Javelosa, 6-3, 6-2, in this week-long competitions supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and Dunlop.

The win set up Custodio to a date with Ma. Junelsa Galinato, a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 winner over Hazel Grecia, for one of the two finals seats.

Kim Polero, Ellen Dominguez and Rachelle de Guzman emulated Custodio’s feat as they barged into the Last 4 of the 12 years and under division.

Polero bested No. 2 Pemrick Alina, 6-4, 6-3, in the boys’ division before Dominguez humbled second pick Steffi Del Rosario, 6-0, 6-1, and De Guzman stunned No. 3 Crista Santiago, 6-0, 6-1, in the distaff side.

Polero will meet the winner between No. 7 Marco Suntay and Juan Gabriel Peña while Dominguez clashes with the winner between No. 4 Sydney Mella and Samantha Um and De Guzman tangles with top seed Patricia Paez.

Paez cruised into the semifinals without lifting her racquet after a double default in the quarterfinals of her bracket pitting Zainna Zamora against Michelle Teng.

Meanwhile, Sally Mae Siso and Argilance Cañizares emerged as the early finalists.

Siso, seeded second in the girls’ 14-under, disposed of fourth pick Joana Peña, 6-1, 6-2, in their semifinals match while boys’ 12-under top pick Cañizares won by default over No. 3 Joachim Samson.

Siso also made it to the girls’ 16-under semifinals via a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 5 Lis Magaway. She meets top seed Enah Baba, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Monika Bañez, in the Last 4.

Completing the 16-under semis cast were second pick Macy Gonzalez, who drubbed Joana Peña, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 4 Samantha Coyiuto, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Custodio.

Girls’ 18-under top pick Trudy Gine Amoranto also lived up to her lofty billing and blanked Francine Turo, 6-0, 6-0, to arrange a semis date with the winner between No. 3 Jasmine Tan Ho and Magaway.

In other matches, unseeded Kyle Parpan barged into the quarters after top pick Jacob Lagman retired while leading, 6-0, 5-1. He meets the winner between No. 8 Ericson Marquez and Anton Punzalan.

Second seed Angelo Rivero trounced Andrew Joshua Cano, 6-0, 6-1, for a quarters faceoff with Jaco Exconde, a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 winner over Jamieson Macagba.

Cordero completes double triumph in Hilado netfest

Kyle Cordero overcame a slow start and outlasted Rolee Joven, 7-6 (4), 7-5, yesterday to clinch the boys’ 18 years and under title in the Luis Hilado Memorial Age Group Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The second-seeded Cordero, ranked 10th in the RP 18-under division, overcame a 3-1 deficit in the first set against the unseeded Joven for his second crown in the event supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and Dunlop.

The 14-year-old Colegio de San Agustin student ruled the boys’ 16-under via a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over fourth seed Kim Polero last Saturday.

Cordero, a gold medalist in the 2007 Palarong Pambansa in Koronadal, drew a first-round bye before downing Marco Del Rosario, 6-0, 6-4, Marco Suntay, 6-2, 6-3 and No. 4 Juan Miguel Regis, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the final.

Cordero’s next stop is Baguio City on April 30.

In other action, second seed Brysl Libao lost the first set before shocking top pick Eric Olivarez, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, for the unisex-10 crown.

Libao had earlier beaten Ariel Frencillo, 6-2, 6-0, Mimo Tomacruz, 6-2, 6-3 and fourth pick Albert Lim Jr., 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Girls’ 18-under top seed Trudy Amoranto lived up to her lofty billing and disposed of unseeded Ma. Junelsa Galinato, 6-1, 6-1, for the title.

Amoranto breezed through Laurice Francisco, 6-0, 6-3 and Francine Turo, 6-0, 6-0, before surviving past third seed Jasmine Tan Ho, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals.

In the boys’ 12-under crown, top-seeded Argil Lance Cañizares bested Mark Escares, 6-4, 6-4.

On the way to the final, Cañizares drew a bye in the first round and hacked out victories against Joshua Cano (5-7, 6-3, 6-3), Ernesto Gatdula, (6-3, 7-6) and No. 3 Joachim Samson via default in the semifinals.

Second pick Angelo Joseph Rivero, on the other hand, ruled the boys’ 14-under division via a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hans Asistio.

Rivero earned an opening-round bye and beat Bruce Ivan Valenzuela, 6-1, 6-1, Andrew Joshua Cano, 6-0, 6-1, and Jaco Exconde, 6-1, 6-0. He won by default over Rafael Squillantini in the semifinals.

Age-group champions received trophies and 120 ranking points, while runners-up and semifinalists got 100 and 80 points, respectively.
