agree with you there. Big difference yung work ethic nila Cecil and Huey compared to our locals. Also the biggest reason is their exposure also since they were young.

Maybe because our local players lack motivation  on there practice ..coz they know that they will be relegated to the sidelines because of the Filams... personal opinion lang po!!! Wink

true, kulang sa motivation pero as a player kung gusto mo talaga umangat kailangan talaga magsumikap regardless of the conditions.  Pero on what I've heard, Jean Henry Lhuillier prefers locals to be on the top of the davis cup team.  Wla lang talagang isa sa kanila na may characteristics na gusto umangat.  Iniisip kc nila agad na di nila kaya.  Actually, sa tingin ko ang palo ni Arcilla against Mamiit pareho lang.  Nasa training at dedication sila nagkaiba.  More on mental toughness ang kulang sa mga locals natin.  Kaya nasasayang lang ang mga skills nila.

Decades ago, our locals were really world beaters. Ampon, Deyro, Johnny Jose, Carmona, Luzon, Dominguez, Hernandez, Sam Ang, Beeyong Sison , Manny Tolentino, Barrientos , So etc...Astig talaga. Even Manny Tecson was also a world beater in juniors beating the likes of Marcelo Lara in the early 80s. Now, our locals can barely beat even ASEAN neigbors.

The state  of tennis in our country today is in a quandary.

If they field an all homegrown pool of players in the Davis Cup and got clobbered and we got relegated to Group 2, they would be criticized no end. But now that we won and maintained our Group 1 status with Fil-Foreigners we can still hear grumblings.

In the absence of an honest to goodness grassroots program, talent identification, training, exposure etc. we have to make do with the talent that is visible and available. They may not be natural homegrown talents but their Filipino hearts cannot be discounted.

To those who were in-the-know during 1991 and below years, what do you think is the difference then and now?  How come we did produce greater players then?  Is it the perennial issue of government support or private sponsorship?  Or the following generations didn't mutate well enough to compete internationally?  Just asking.  Wink

Opinion ko lang.  Halo-halo na cguro.  Iba magisip ang mga pros natin dati sa ngayon.  Parang more on spotlight ang gusto ng mga bago.  Just try to compare Beeyong and mga pros natin ngayon.

To many factors to blame for the present state of pinoy tennis. No grassroots program, limited corporate sponsorships, lack of talent identification, our best coaches are all working overseas, or even the shrinking middle class and also too much basketball laugh in the Philippines. Sana in my lifetime, I get to see a Pinoy world beater ala Srichaphan and Michael Chang.

In my own humble opinion i rather see home grown talents being clobbered rather than see our team winning with imports... i know in the long run they will have the proper experience to hurdle those foreign players just like before!!

some may argue that tennis today is much harder than before.. but i think with the proper motivation ,our players will cope with the present trends Cheesy Cheesy
