Dapat kasali yan. 2nd round siya sa Thailand, 1st round sa Malaysia. Sa Malaysia tinalo ni Sekiguchi, tiebreak sa 3rd set. Parehong Grade 1 tournaments.

6 RP netters ousted (from Manila Bulletin Online)

Waylon Galvez

Filipinos were ambushed in their home turf yesterday, losing six matches in the opening of the 2008 Mitsubishi International Juniors Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis.

Joshua Ho, Leander Lazaro, Paul Nicole Magaway, Mark Jaypee Balce, Carlos Martin Espedido and qualifier Kyle Cordero exited one after another in a disappointing performance that again illustrated the sad state of Philippine tennis.

Ho had the best performance, battling New Zealand’s Ben Mclachlan in a gripping struggle before bowing out, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-7 (6).

The match lasted four hours, one of the longest in tournament history, according to organizers.

Ho was hit by leg cramps late in the third set, but the 17-year-old kept fighting on, sending the match to another tie break before two successive errors handed the win to the Kiwi campaigner.

Maciej Rajski of Poland defeated Lazaro, 6-3, 6-4; Hong Kong’s Justin Chak-T To downed Magaway, 6-1, 6-3; Michael Lampa of the United States beat Balce, 6-1, 6-1; Kelsey Stevenson of Canada eliminated Cordero, 6-1, 6-4; while Espedido was outclassed by Hong Kong’s Chun Ming Yam, 2-6, 0-6.

Seeing action today after earning a first round bye is Francis Casey Alcantara, who is seeded 12th.

Alcantara, ranked 114th in the world, will face world No. 290 Rajski.

Pablo Olivarez Jr., a member of the RP team that was swept by Japan in their Group I Davis Cup tie, and Juan Fidel Regis were playing Sonny Purnomo of Indonesia and Riki Mclachlan of New Zealand at press time, respectively.

Australians Maverick Banes, Dane Propoggia and Jarryd Chaplin, and Japanese Shuichi Sekiguchi also made it through.

Banes downed compatriot Stephen Hoh, 7-6 (3), 0-6, 6-4, while Propoggia defeated Poland’s Igor Bujdo Nowak, 6-3, 6-4.

Chaplin won against Christopher Marquis of India, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and Sekiguchi edged Chih Chen of Chinese Taipei, 6-2, 6-1.

In the distaff side, tournament qualifier Ashling Sumner of Australia outclassed Tanvi Shah of India, 6-4, 6-3.

Hi All!  One consolation, panalo naman si Nino Alcantara (3 sets).  Sa girls, wiped out daw yung mga pambato ng Pilipinas.   Angry

Hi all!  In fairness, karamihan yata sa mga players natin na lumaro ay nasa 14-15 years old age group while yung mga kalaban ay nasa 16 years of age na....Valuable experience ito sa mga players natin.  At least, di na kailangan pang lumabas ng bansa to play with players of international caliber.    Grin

Alcantara routs Australian bet to enter semis

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

Francis Casey Alcantara blunted Australian third seed Mark Verryth’s power game to pull off his second upset victory yesterday and advance into the semifinals of the 12th Mitsubishi International Junior Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Alcantara racked up nine straight games to oust the hard-hitting Australian, 7-5, 6-0, in one hour and 21 minutes and continue his magical run in this tournament where he is the lone surviving Filipino campaigner.

The 12th pick and world No. 114 Alcantara chased and returned all Verryth’s powerful serves and was patient all game in sealing the win while staying in pace to becoming the first Filipino to win the title.

"Malakas siya lalo na ‘yung mga serves niya. Kailangan ko lang ibalik lahat ng mga iyon para manalo," the Cagayan de Oro-based Alcantara said.

The six-foot-five Verryth, ranked No. 43 junior in the world, blasted his way with big serves and shots to seize leads at 3-1, 4-3 and 5-4.

But his final lead turned out to be his last as the 5-foot-7 Alcantara put on an outstanding performance, winning several points with an impeccable net game.

"Kailangan ko lang mabreak ang mga serve niya para hindi ako masyadong mahirapan," Alcantara, a Week 1 runner-up of last year’s Phinma International Juniors, said.

It was Alcantara’s biggest win so far since shocking No. 8 Matthew James of Great Britain in the quarters.

Alcantara became more aggressive in the second set and forced Verryth into errors while capping his victory with a between-the-legs return that sent the Australian scrambling.

Next for Alcantara is second pick and world No. 28 Borut Puc of Slovenia, who edged Japanese sixth seed Hiroki Moriya, 6-4, 7-5.

Korean fourth pick Cho Soong-jae pulled off the day’s biggest upset via a thrilling 6-3, 7-6 (4) triumph over top seed Kittiphong Wachiramanowong of Thailand.

Australian Andrew Thomas completed the Final Four cast with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph on Alexander Lobkov of Russia.

In the girls’ action, Hungarian 10th seed Timea Babos stunned second pick Elna Chernyakova of Russia, 6-0, 6-0, for a semis meeting with Ukranian Nadiya Kichenok, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 winner over Thailand’s Kanyapat Narattana.

Kanyapat’s compatriot, topseed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, whipped Uzbekistan’s Alexandra Kolesnichenko, 6-0, 6-3 to arrange semis date with No. 4 Yang Zi-jun of Hong Kong, a 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 winner over fifth pick RekaLuca Jani of Hungary.

Francis Casey Alcantara’s bid to become the first Filipino champion of the Mitsubishi International Juniors Tennis Championship came to a crashing halt as he bowed to the power-hitting Borut Puc of Slovenia, 6-4, 4-6, 0-6, in the semifinals yesterday at the Rizal Tennis Center.

The 12th seed Alcantara, 16, started strong but wavered in the face of Puc’s fiery game, bowing to the second-ranked Slovenian after two hours and 10 minutes of battle.

Alcantara appeared headed for an upset when he masterfully won the first set, 6-4, then took a 2-0 lead in the second.

But Puc, 17, turned things around and salvaged the match, hammering powerful serves and crisp forehand winners.

“It was tough. He was tough,” said the 6-foot-3 Puc, who also made the semifinals last year but missed the final on a 2-6, 3-6 loss to eventual champion John Patrick Smith of Australia.

With a win over Alcantara, Puc arranged a final match with No. 4 Cho Soong Jae of Korea, who booted out top seed Andrew Thomas, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

In girls’ action, top seed Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand downed No. 4 Yang Zi Jun of Hong Kong, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to arrange a showdown with No. 10 Timea Babos of Hungary, a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) winner over No. 12 Nadiya Kichenok of Ukraine.

So dejected was Alcantara that he didn’t attend the post-game interview.

“I know it would be tough playing him (Alcantara), he fought really hard. But I came out physically stronger,” said Puc.

“He’s a good player and he has two years left in the juniors circuit, I know he’s going to improve,” said Puc, who has a chance to play Alcantara again next year since he still has one more year left in the 18-and-under circuit.

The Slovenian, who had never lost a set in the tourney until yesterday, hit his shots either too long or too wide in the first set and the early part of the second, enabling Alcantara to dictate the tempo.

Puc, however, got stronger as the match wore on.

“My game plan was to stretch the match to a third set because I know he’s tired after all the tough games he’d played here,” said Puc. “I wasn’t bothered by the heat, not at all. I wish it was hotter.” Puc displayed some court antics doing pushups twice late in the third set when Alcantara was treated for cramps.
