FIVE years since it was last held in Cebu, the prestigious Prince All Students tennis tournament comes back to town next weekend at the Alta Vista tennis courts.
The competition has been consistently organized in Manila for years and this is just the third time that it came back to Cebu. The two champions produced are Sun.Star Cebu columnist and Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) regional head John Pages in the inaugural staging and five years after him, was Bo Alburo.
Tournament organizer and tennis coach Fritz Tabura said that the competition will be a singles event for the girls and boys players in the high school division and men and women collegiate players.
“This will serve as a tune-up game for the Cebuano players who are about to compete in upcoming national and regional meets such as the Private Schools Athletic Association and the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association.”
Tabura wants the competition in Cebu to be done annually and that the winners will be sent to compete in Manila.
Apart from Prince, the other all-students tennis event in the country is the one sponsored by Milo.
Meanwhile, upon learning of the upcoming event, there has been a clamor that the elementary division will be added.
“There are requests that the elementary division be added because we have a lot of elementary players here in Cebu. A number of them are also competing in the CVRAA,” Tabura added. This, however, is still set to be approved by Prince officials.
In another development, Tabura, who laid low in organizing tennis competitions, said that he is back on track after getting his license and accreditation from Philta.
The number of junior division competitions in Cebu dwindled in the past year because it required a Philta accredited official to see the event through.
“It would take a lot of time and money for the organizers’ part because we have to fly in an official and take care of their billeting,” Tabura said.
Tabura added that Pages had requested Philta to accredit Tabura so that there will be more events in Cebu. Tabura, however, can only organize events in Pages’ area of responsibility. (MCB)
