Seeded netters drew first-round byes as the 19th Andrada Cup Age-Group Tennis Championships fires off at 9 a.m. today at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Girls’ 18 years and under top seed Enah Baba and second pick Rachel Lucero advanced into the next phase without breaking a sweat with Lucero also earning a free ride in the 16-under division.

Top three netters Shannine Olivarez, Macy Gonzales and Patricia Orteza also drew byes in the 14-under class, as well as Ericka Lagura, Katrina Orteza and Isabella Orteza in the 12-under category.

Top pick Eric Olivarez Jr., Vince Salas and Brysl Libao also gained automatic second round berths in the unisex 10-under class.

Today’s matches will see up-and-coming netters Kim Saraza, Leander Lazaro, Arjohn Dela Cruz, Jacob Lagman and Arsin Canizares strutting their wares.

Saraza, along with Gonzales, Lagman and Eric Olivarez, aims to extend his supremacy in age-group competitions after winning the Milo Junior Tennis Cup in New Year’s Eve at the Philam Homes Tennis Club in Quezon City.

Olivarez, meanwhile, also seeks to duplicate her feat in the Philta-Dr. Pablo Olivarez Age-Group Championships last month where she claimed the 16- and 14-under crowns.

At stake in the Grade 2 event is 120 ranking points for all the winners, 100 points for the runners-up and 75 points for the semifinalists.

Kristel Satumbaga

Tim Polero and Natasha Gaston stunned their respective seeded rivals as upsets rocked the second round of the 19th Andrada Cup Age-Group Tennis Championships yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Polero caught third seed Luis Asistio Jr. flat-footed to fashion out a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the boys’ 18 years and under division while Gaston fended off the rallies of fourth pick Alyssa Mendoza, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the distaff side.

Polero’s surprise win set him up for a semifinals date with top seed Kim Ivor Saraza and came after he absorbed a 4-6, 4-6 loss from Israel Abarquez in the 14-under three hours earlier.

Saraza claimed his reserved seat in the Last 4 by outplaying Edwin Olivarez Jr., 6-0, 6-3.

Gaston, for her part, will go for a semifinals seat against Kahnee Joseph, who won by default over Therese Alyanna Tomacruz.

Sharing the day’s spotlight was Kyle Parpan who upset sixth seed Jeremiah Latorre, 6-3, 7-5, in the boys’ 12-under to arrange a quarterfinals duel with second pick Argil Canizares, a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Joshua Cano.

Unseeded netters Angelo Gonzales and Betto Orendain also earned quarterfinals tickets in the boys’ 12-under after seventh seed Mark Concepcion and third pick Vince Tabo-Tabo failed to show up for the matches against them.

Eric Olivarez Jr, Brysl Libao and Vince Salas, meanwhile, lived up to their billing with twin victories.

Olivarez blanked Pauline Diva, 6-0, 6-0, in the unisex 10-under and duplicated the feat two hours later with another 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Neil Puche in the 12-under.

Libao, for her part, escaped with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 wins over Lenard Cheng in the unisex 10-under before routing Christian Sarmiento, 6-4, 6-0, in the 12-under.

Salas also scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mimo Tomacruz in the 10-under and a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kyle Joseph in the 12-under.

In the girls’ 16-under, second seed Shannine Olivarez swamped Cadadoca, 6-0, 6-0; third seed July Javelosa outclassed Akiko De Guzman, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2; and fourth seed Enah Baba subdued JV Custodio, 6-3, 6-1.

In the boys’ side, third seed Pemrick Alina walloped Joshua Angelo Santiago, 6-1, 6-3 for a next round meeting with eighth seed Ed Amor, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Romain Lepoutre, while fourth pick Jason Patrombon trounced Nestor Puche Jr., 6-0, 6-1 for a quarters date with sixth seed Kim Polero, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Hans Asistio.

Fifth seed Alberto Villamor beat Arjohn Dela Cruz, 6-2, 6-0, to arrange a clash with top seed Saraza, who won by default over Ace Matias.

Dela Cruz and Asistio, meanwhile, made it to the next round of the 14-under class.

The top-seeded Dela Cruz whipped Daniel Um, 6-0, 6-1, while the No. 7 Asistio clipped John Rey Rudas, 6-0, 6-2.

19th Andrada Cup Age-Group Championships

Lazaro duels Saraza for title

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

LEANDER LAZARO thumped Patrick Arevalo, 6-2, 6-3, to barge into the premier boys’ 18 years and under finals even as upsets continued to overhaul the formcharts in the 19th Andrada Cup Age-Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The second seeded Lazaro, aiming for a double championship, will meet top seed Kim Ivor Saraza, who effortlessly claimed the other finals seat after Tim Polero failed to show up in their semis match, for the crown set today at 11 a.m.

Earlier, Lazaro, also the second pick in the 16 years and under, booted out Israel Abarquez, 6-0, 7-5, to reach the semifinals of the division along with the No. 1 Saraza, third seed Pemrick Alina and No. 4 Jason Patrombon.

Saraza made it without a sweat, claiming his berth when Alberto Villamor failed to show up for their match while Alina dumped Ed Amor, 6-3, 6-3, and Patrambon won by default over Kim Polero.

Nikki De Dios, meanwhile, ignited the spate of upsets by shrugging off a second set lapse to oust second seed Rachel Lucero, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the girls’ 18-under and arrange a Last 4 meeting with third pick July Javelosa, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Kimbery Mella.

Javelosa, earlier, was a victim of a reversal in the 16-under where she was seeded third, bowing to Chynna Mamawal, 4-6, 0-6.

It was also in the 16-under where Macy Gonzales bumped off fourth seed Enah Baba, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Joining Mamawal and Gonzales in the semis were top seed Rachel Lucero, who bested Marinel Rudas, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 2 seed Shannine Olivarez, who routed Samantha Coyiuto, 6-3, 6-2.

Kim Alexis Sotelo joined the frenzy of upsets as she walloped girls’ 12-under fourth seed Sydney Alexa Mella, 6-1, 6-1, to set a semis date with top seed Katrina Orteza, who won over Crista Santiago, 6-2, 6-1.

Hans Asistio lcapped the day of reversals when he ousted boys’ 14-under third seed Enrique Ferrer, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

Not affected by the upsets was the unisex 10 years and under as the top two seeds, No.1 Eric Olivarez and No. 2 Vince Salas asserted themselves over separate rivals.

Olivarez clipped Brysl Libao, 6-1, 6-2, while Salas blanked Maia Balce, 6-0, 6-0, for a finals showdown.

Baba made up for her 16-under loss by racing past Alexandra Apostolicas, 6-0, 6-0, in the other 18-under quarterfinals match for a semis duel with Natasha Gaston, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Kahnee Joseph.

Boys’ 14-under second pick Jacob Lagman whitewashed Argil Canizares, 6-0, 6-0, and Mauro Bengzon tripped Kyle Parpan, 6-2, 6-2.

Canizares redeemed himself later when he thumped Parpan, 6-2, 6-2, in the 12-under which also saw Betto Orendain win over Brian Viray, 6-3, 7-6 (1).

Orteza’s younger sister, Isabela, also prevailed in the 12-under where she osuted Deborah Abarquez, 6-1, 6-0, for a semis meeting with top pick Ericka Lagura, who swamped Urduja Eminga, 6-0, 6-0.

Lazaro, Salas, Olivarez shine

by:  Kristel Satumbaga

Leander Lazaro, Shannin Olivarez, and Vince Salas emerged as the new year’s toast in junior tennis yesterday when they emerged double champions at the close of the 19th Andrada Cup Age-Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Lazaro, who annexed the premier boys’ 18 years and under crown with a 6-26-2 upset of top pick Kim Ivor Saraza, asserted himself over the same rival in the 16-under championship, emerging a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 winners.

Not to be outshone, Olivarez pocketed the girls’ 16 years and under crown after dominating the 14-under class.

The top-seeded Olivarez, youngest daughter of former Parañaque City Mayor and Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) president and chairman, thumped Marinel Rudas, 6-2, 7-5, in the 14-under and returned later for a masterful 6-3, 6-0 triumph over an upset-conscious Chyna Mamawal.

But the biggest feat was achieved by the nine-year-old Salas, who, earlier, had been inadvertently reported to have lost in the unisex 10 years and under finals, wielded the upset axe anew, tripping second seed Argil Canizares, 6-1, 6-4, for the boys’ 12 and under plum, his 15th title in four years.

Last Saturday, Salas, a Grade 2 student at the Brightwood School in Angeles City, tripped unisex 10-under top pick Erick Olivarez Jr., 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (9), in the finals.

En route to the12-under finals, Salas waylaid Kyle Joseph, Brysl Libao and the same Olivarez. He also dumped Mimo Tomacruz and Maia Balce on the way to the unisex 10-under championship match.

The 14-year-old, 5-foot-10 Lazaro, for his part, disposed of Vito Dans, Israel Abarquez and Jason Patrombon in straight sets before surviving the rallies of Saraza in the 16-under finals.

Shannin, 13, ousted Ericka Lagura and Patricia Orteza in the 14-under and Jade Cadadoca, Samantha Coyiuto and Macy Gonzales in the 16-under.

Also winning their finals matches were Nikki De Dios, Dheo Talatayod, and Ericka Lagura.

De Dios bounced back from a first set loss to shock girls’ 18 and under top seed Enah Baba, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, while Talatayod outplayed boys’ 14 and under No. 1 Jacob Lagman, 6-2, 6-3.

Lagura, the top pick in the girls’ 12 and under group, asserted herself over second seed Katrina Orteza, 7-5, 6-3.

The winners in this Grade 2 event received 120 ranking points while the runners-up got 100.
