Dy opens bid with a Blast
By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA (Manila Bulletin Online)
REIGNING WOMEN’S champion Denise Dy opened her title-retention bid on a high note by blasting her rival to lead the advance of 15 others in the second round of the 26th Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open at the PCA claycourt in Paco, Manila.
A double gold medalist in the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games, Dy proved too classy for Ivy De Castro as she romped to a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
After a tense first set battle, Dy found herself falling to 2-1 hole in the second set as De Castro held her serves. But the California-based Dy got back into the groove and fired several winners to wear down De Castro.
"I was a bit nervous at the start because I know everyone is looking up to me," said Dy, who is fine-tuning for the coming SEA Games in Thailand next month.
"I just tried to bring my game back and shrug off the fears. It’s a test of nerves so I have to overcome it," she added.
Dy battles unseeded Nikki De Dios in the next round after the latter scored a 6-0, 6-4 win over Carla Ferrer.
Third pick Czarina Mae Arevalo, also a member of the RP women’s team that won the SEAG bronze two years back, secured a second round slot without a sweat as her rival Mikki Manalo did not show up.
Arevalo’s next assignment will be against Sherley Valler, who outhustled Jasmine Tan Ho, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Also joing the second round are No. 2 Bambi Zoleta and fourth seed Arran Micayabas.
Zoleta clobbered clobbered Julie Em Botor, 6-0, 6-3, while Micayabas downed Shery Rose Ong, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Fifth seed Michelle Pang also advanced via a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Kitkat Zobel, as well as sixth-seed Aileen Rogan, who beat Steffi Dizon, 6-3, 6-1.
Other winners were seventh pick Trudygine Amortanto, who nipped Martina Rivero, 6-1, 6-3, while Zoleta’s older sister who is seeded eighth, Bien, blanked Cristita Gulosino, 6-0, 6-0.
Third-round action in the men’s singles resumes today with defending titlist Johnny Arcilla and RP team member Patrick John Tierro favored to prevail over their rivals.
