5 RP netters enter Asian 14-U quarters

Inquirer
Last updated 04:11am (Mla time) 10/11/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Arjohn dela Cruz and Bernardine Siso used their familiarity with the turf to bundle out their seeded foreign rivals and lead the local charge in the Agra Cup-Asian 14-U Series at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center Wednesday.

Six Filipinas also barged into the girls’ quarterfinals led by third seed Shannine Mae Olivarez in this event organized by the Asian Tennis Federation.

Dela Cruz used a steady game to wear down second seed Aashsaam Goghari of Indonesia, 7-6 (2), 6-4, and set up a quarterfinal face-off with compatriot Leander Lazaro, who ended the run of the only Filipino seed Kyle Cordero.

Lazaro overcame a first-round jolt from Cordero before fashioning out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

It was the second win by Dela Cruz over a visiting foe following his thrashing of German Maximilian Becker in the first round.

Siso also scored a second straight victory over a foreign rival as he ousted seventh seed Pearljit Singh of Malaysia, 6-2, 6-0.

He will take on yet another foreign bet in third seed Mohd Assri Merzuki of Malaysia, who won over compatriot Duzbionjit Singh, 6-2, 6-1.

Twins Kim and Tim Polero also sustained their impressive runs with Kim hammering out a 6-1, 4-0 (retired) triumph over sixth-seeded Malaysian Wye Jones Saw and Tim eliminating compatriot Rafael Squillantini, 7-4, 6-3.

Kim Polero will next face first seed Ariez Elyaas Dean Hashsam, who kicked out Saudi Arabian Majed Alshaikh, 6-1, 6-0. Tim moved up against fourth seed Jason Michael Lee of Malaysia, who bundled out Angelo Joseph Rivero, 6-3, 6-2.

In girls’ action, Olivarez hurdled Crizzabelle Paulino, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the quarters against fellow Filipino Macy Gonzales, who advanced at the expense of compatriot Pailou Mojica, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Jonicka Martina Guba handily beat Patricia Joy Orteza, 6-0, 6-2, to arrange a duel against top seed Adelle Chia Boey of Malaysia. The Malaysian prevailed over Maika Jae Tanpoco, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Marc Anthony Reyes

More upsets rock Asian netfest
spacer

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

JONICKA MARTINA Guba endured toe blisters to climb back from a first set loss and score a first class upset yesterday for a semifinals berth in the girls’ singles of the Agra-Cup Asian 14/U Series at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Guba, a 14year-old student at Dona Hartencia Salas Benedicto High School in Bacolod, gave up the first set to Malaysian top seed Adelle Chia Boey but roared back in the next two frames to hammer out a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, win that assured a Filipino finalist tomorrow.

"Wala ako sa sarili n’ung simula. Every game kasi nagkaka-blisters ako at pumutok ito simula pa lang ng laro ko. Pero nakabawi ako kaagad nang napag-aralan ko na ang laro niya," said Guba after the two hours and 24 minutes contest.

Guba goes for a finals berth today against third seed Shannine Mae Olivarez, who disposed of fifth pick Macy Gonzales, 6-1, 6-2.

Meeting in the other semis are second seed Theiviya Selvarajoo of Malaysia, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Filipino Cristabelle Paulino, and fourth seed Sally Mae Siso, who downed Victoria Louise Magaway, 6-3, 6-2.

Guba’s win rubbed off on the other local bets in the boys’ division as Bernardine Siso and Tim Polero continued to wield the upset axe to similarly barge into the Last 4 of this Australian Open event supported by by Wilson Balls, Persiana Restaurant, 1st Insurance, Orchid Garden Suites and the Philippine Sports Commission.

Siso, campaigning out of the SanCase Tennis Club of Cebu, whitewashed third seed Mohd Assri Merzuki of Malaysia, 6-0, 6-0, to set the stage for a semifinals date withtop seedAriez Elyaa Dean Hasham of Malaysia, who stamped his class over Tim’s twin brother, Kim, 6-3, 6-1.

Polero, who ousted fifth seed Abdul Rashman Janahi of Bahrain on opening day, booted out fourth seed Jason Michael Lee of Malaysia, 6-2, 6-4, to arrange a Last 4 meeting with compatriot Leander Lazaro, who dumped Arjohn dela Cruz, 7-5, 6-4.

Hi all!  this is just proof that Filipino Netters can dominate in Asia!!!!Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

Article from Manila Bulletin

Siso, Guba clash for Asian Title

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

SALLY Mae Siso came through with the bigger returns to bump off second seed Theviya Selvarajoo of Malaysia, 6-3, 6-2, and arrange and all-Filipino finals in the girls’ division of the Agra Cup Asian 14/U Series at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 13-year-old Siso, the fourth-seeded campaigner from the SanCase Tennis Club in Cebu, tangles with Bacolod-based Jonicka Martina Guba for the crown and the 300 Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) ranking points today.

The unseeded Guba barged into the finals by stretching her upset run, ousting third seed Shannine Mae Olivarez, 6-0, 6-3, to follow up her 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision over Malaysian top seed Adelle Chia Boey in the quarterfinals and the 6-0, 6-3 win over No. 6 Patricia Joy Orteza in the second round.

But while Sally Mae frolicked, elder brother Bernardine went down against top seed Ariez Elyaas Dean Hasham of Malaysia in the boys’ competitions.

Hasham, ranked fifth in this age division by the ATF, regained his bearing in the third set after a two-hour rain delay to stop Bernardine, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, and remain the only foreigner surviving in this event supported by Wilson Balls, Persiana Restaurant, 1st Insurance, Orchid Garden Suites and the Philippine Sports Commission.

The Malaysian goes for the title against Leander Lazaro, who outsteadied upset-conscious compatriot Tim Polero, 6-3, 6-3.

In the boys’ division, Leander Lazaro snatched the first finals berth via a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over local bet Tim Polero. Lazaro, who first drew blood with a 7-5, 6-4 win over RP’s No. 1 netter Kyle Cordero in the second round, clashes with top pick Ariez Elyaas Dean Hashsam of Malaysia, who survived RP bet Bernardine Siso, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. The last foreign netter standing, Dean Hashsam struggled for the first-set win and was actually leading in the second 4-3 despite a blistered toe after the match was interrupted by rains. Siso proved to be more rejuvenated after the two-and-a-half-hour delay and claimed the second set but quickly loses steam in the decider.

The 14-year-old Lazaro, acknowledging a tough finals today, said he would give his all to make the tournament an all-Filipino affair.

"Fight lang. Gagawin ko lang ang gusto kong mangyari," said Lazaro.

Guba destroys foe; Lazaro buries Malaysian

By Marc Anthony Reyes
Inquirer
Last updated 10:58pm (Mla time) 10/13/2007

LEANDER LAZARO AND MARTINA Jonicka Guba trounced their respective foes to capture the singles titles Saturday in the Agra Cup-Asian 14/U Series at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Lazaro, the 14-year-old junior high from St. James Academy Malabon, took the sting out of the Malaysian top-seed Ariez Elyaas Dean Hashsam’s crisp groundstrokes to fashion out a 6-4, 6-2 triumph in the boys singles championships.

Standing at 5-foot-9, Lazaro forced Hashsam to scurry from end to end and then bamboozled the Malaysian with feathery drop shots every now and then to secure the triumph.

Over at court 1, Guba endured the pain of ruptured blisters on both feet to overcome Sally Mae Siso, 6-1, 7-5, and annex the girls singles title. The 14-year-old from La Carlota City slumped to the ground after after Siso slammed a forehand into the net and quickly took off her problematic shoes before shaking hands with her victim.

“Ang hirap po talaga, nagputukan yung mga paltos ko—apat sa right, tatlo sa left (It was very hard, my blisters burst—four on my right and three on my left),” said the third-year high from Dona Hontencia Salas Benedicto High.

The youngest of three tennis playing brood that include former age-group champions Yannick and Yohann thus took her 18th title this year.

Guba and Siso, who professed to being best of friends and even shared lunch after their match, late Friday snared the doubles title against Marian Hillary de Guzman and Theiviya Selvarajoo, 6-1, 6-3.

In the boys doubles, Hashsam and compatriot Mohd Assri Merzuki defeated Angelo Rivero and Alberto Villamor, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to take the crown yesterday.

Lazaro and Guba thus earned a single-round ticket to the Bahrain leg of the series.
