HOT START: NADAL OPENS YEAR WITH A BANG!!!
Abu Dhabi, UAE - Rafael Nadal won his first title of 2010 beating Robin Soderling, 7-6(3), 7-5 in the final of the season opening CAPITAL Exhibition on Saturday, Jan 2 to end a two-match losing streak against the Swede.

Roger Federer defeated David Ferrer of Spain, 6-1, 7-5 to finish third. Nadal will play in next week's Qatar Open, the Australian Open from January 18 and the ABN AMRO from February 8 in the Netherlands before taking a break. Nadal injured both knees and his abdomen last season, missing Wimbledon, among other tournaments.

FEDERER, NADAL WIN DOHA OPENERS
Doha: Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal began impressively in the road, which most people hope will lead the two tennis legends to their 21st meeting at the opening tournament of the 2010 ATP World Tour, the Qatar Open.

Federer, the Wimbledon and French Open champion beat Christopher Rochus, the World No. 86, while Nadal , the Australian Open champion beat Italian Simone Boleli, ranked 93 in the world. Federer next plays Russian Evegeny Korolev and Nadal plays Italian Potito Starace."I feel like it could be a great season," Federer said. I've come in this season pretty refreshed". Meanwhile, Nadal said " I'm just trying to play well here. If I win I have more chance of being No. 1. But, I'm taking it day by day , and so for me being No.1 is not a lot."

Doha, Qatar- Top-ranked Roger Federer and No. 2 Rafael Nadal each won in straight sets Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals at the Qatar Open. Federer beat Evgeny Karolev of Russia 6-2,6-4 and Nadal defeated Potito Starace of Italy 6-2, 6-2. Federer broke three times in the first set and once in the second. The Swiss star will next play either Andreas Seppi of Italy or Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.

"I know how he plays so I had the match under control," Federer said. "He plays a lot of balls on the forehand, so I was able to stay ahead in the match. There were long rallies in the second set, but I'm pleased to have reached the quarterfinals".

Nadal improved to 6-0 against Starace, who has only a 2-16 record against top 10 opponents. "I'm happy with my form," Nadal said. "This was confirmation that I'm playing well. Right now, I'm just concentrating on winning each game I play. Now, I'm only taking one match at a time. It wasn't a tough match".

Good to see that Davydenko is really playing well. I think he has a good shot at winning next week's open. He is not getting any younger, and that one grandslam win is the only thing that is missing in his otherwise illustrous career.

after defeating federer and nadal from SF and the finals respectively, im sure he's mentally ahead from the two in the australian open. ang question lang is yung grandslam exposure and experience nya sa semis or finals, parang kulang... maybe this is his chance!

KOOYONG CLASSIC-Melbourne

Melbourne- World number 3  Novak Djokovic and U.S. Open Champion Juan Martin del Potro kicked off their Australian Open preparation with easy first round wins at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne on Wednesday. Del Potro cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Croatian Ivan Ljubicic before Serbian Djokovic made light work of experienced German Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-3 at the eight-man invitational event.

Despite blustery conditions at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, Del Potro was in fine touch for his first hit-out of the season, although he may hope for tougher encounters this week after Ljubicic repeatedly gifted him key points with unforced errors.

from previous years, kooyong classic was not counted as an atp world tour event. players did not earn atp points from this tournament. is it different this time? counted na ba siya ngayon?

BNP PARIBAS OPEN-Indian Wells, California

Reigning champion Rafael Nadal breezed into the third round of the BNP Paribas Open with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Germany's Rainer Schuettler on Saturday. Third-seed Nadal set up a third round meeting with Croatia's Mario Ancic, who struggled past France's Julien Benneteau, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. Novak Djokovic, seeded second , had a topsy turvey 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 over Mardy Fish in a reprise of a 2008 final. The Serb's opponent in the third round will be Germany's Phillip Kohlschreiber.

Russian Nikolai Davydenko seeded fifth, also progressed with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Latvia's Ernests Gulbis and will next take on Victor Troicki. Spain's 10th seed Fernando Verdasco is also through, defeating Paraguay's Ramon Delgado 6-4, 6-1. Verdasco third round opponent will be Czech No. 10 Tomas Berdych.

Marin Cilic was the main casualty of the day. The Croatian No. 8 seed, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals was crushed as Spain's Guillermo Garcia Lopez won 7-6(1), 6-0. In the women's draw, top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was bundled out, piling up unforced errors in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 loss tp Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round.

Twice champion and former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters of Belgium had much easier time, cruising into the third round with a 6-2, 6-1 demolition of Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Federer struggles past foe; Sharapova gets door

World Number one Roger Federer shrugged off a second-set lapse to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Open with a victory over Victor Hanescu. Federer said he was pleased with his first match since his Australian Open triumph, even if he wasn't quite firing on all cylinders in his 6-3,6-7(5/7),6-1 victory. "I was happy with the way I played,"Federer said. "Not having played for so long, I thought it was a good match overall.

Hanescu was Federer second-round victim in Melbourne, where Federer claimed his 16th Grand slam singles title. The Swiss star has been slated to play the Dubai Open last month, but was sidelined by the lung infection. Federer, won the Indian Wells Masters 1000 title in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

China's Zheng Jie battled past former champion Maria Sharapova 6-3,2-6,6-3 to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open. Zheng will next face Alicia Molik, with a chance to avenge her defeat to the Australian in Dubai last month. Zheng toiled for 2 hours 43 minutes to dispatch the 10th seeded Sharapova-the second set alone taking 68 minutes.

Tapos na ang Mens QF.

Pasok sa semis:
Roddick v Soderling
Nadal v. Ljubicic

Maganda ang nilaro ni Soderling against Murray. Murray had a chance to come back and even the match on the 2nd set pero kinapos eventually losing the match on the second set tie-break.

Ljubicic wins the Championship at the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open. Ljubicic and Roddick held all their service games but Ljubicic was the better player in both of the tie-breaker.

Maganda ang nilaro ni Ljubicic sa tournament na ito. Matindi pa nga ang dinaanan niya bago niya nakuha ang Championship. 4th round against Djokovic tapos Nadal in the Semis. Ito yata ang first Major (ATP 1000) championship trophy niya. And he's 31.

Very solid performance by Mr. Clean (Ljubicic) Grin at Indian Wells. I thought Roddick was going to win his first title there but the Croat was just too good, especially on the tie-breaks. Once again a very disappointing loss for the American, who I thought played exceptionally well throughout the tournament.

On the women's side, Jankovic clearly outplayed Wozniacki. She almost got beaten by Errani in the 2nd round, am glad to see her in top form once again.
