Fabs makes a good point. The serve is a vertically-oriented stroke and acceleration of the racket head is necessary for power and/or spin. In this stroke, ideally the racket head should be travelling much faster than the hand.

By contrast, the forehand is a horizontally-oriented stroke and a locked wrist is necessary to maintain racket head control and stability.  Power and/or spin is provided by swingspeed for the most part. Examine any pro's forehand stroke and one will notice that they would cock the wrist at the top of the backswing, lock the wrist during the forward swing and impact, then relax allowing the wrist to naturally pronate after impact and during the follow-thru. Agassi and Davydenko are the best examples of this. Although Nadal's forehand may appear "wristy", his wrist is locked solid at impact. This is also true with Monfil's apparent wristy forehand. All the wrist action happens after impact on the follow-thru. Some players who emulate these guys make the mistake of assuming that the entire stroke is facilitated by the wrist, and they stroke their forehands accordingly.  This results in forehand inconsistency, unpredictability, mistiming and extra stress on the wrist that may cause pain and chronic wrist problems. Locking the wrist can be accomplished simply by gripping down on the handle before impact. Of course, the grip is relaxed on the backswing and on the follow-thru.

i'm having a problem ksi, sumasakit mga wrist ko after practice/match. lalo n 'wristy' ung forehand ko.

maraming reasons. maybe one or more or none of these:

- wrong grip size
- may need a softer over grip
- normal if you're a beginner, practice / play more to gain strength & proper style
- need to do wrist exercise to strengthen wrist.
- might need to change shots / strokes

Strengthen your wrists w/ weights or resistance bands and do several stretching excercises before playing!

FYI when u pronate during service it's not only the wrist but the whole arm. It's mostly applicable for players using the continental grip as it generates more spin for accuracy and placement. Pronation of the wrist is also evident on ground strokes.

One good exercise that I've learned from my coach to strengthen ur wrist is dribbling the tennis ball using ur racquet (back and front) 100 reps a day  Wink

Firm ba talaga dapat ang wrist sa lahat ng sroke sa tennis??

it would also help stretching the wrists (against a wall) before playing.. just like stretching any other parts of your body before the game.. Cheesy
