Both Jesson Patrombon and Francis Casey Alcantara advanced to the 2nd round of the Grade A World Super Junior Tennis Championships in Osaka, Japan.  Patrombon beat Christian Oliver Lee of Malaysia 7-5; 6-1 and will face Shuichi Sekuguchi ranked 18 in the world and the tournaments 4th seed (also the doubles partner of Nino Alcantara) in the second round.  Earlier Nino advanced beating Masashi Watanabe 6-2; 6-1 he will next face Korea's Lee Kea Moon ranked 438 in the world. Good Luck to both players!!!

In doubles Patrombon and Wagland advanced to the 2nd round with a 3-6; 7-5 (10-5) victory of the Japanese pairing of Furuta and Nakagawa they will play 2nd seeded pairing of Gao and Huang.  Unfortunately, Francis Alcantara and partner Sekeguchi dropped their opening doubles to the German pairing of Nekic and Wunner 6-4; 2-6 (7-10).

Second round in singles will be played today with Alcantara playing in court 6 first match and Patrombon playing in court 2 3rd match.

Tennis King, who is the better player Patrombon or Lazaro? Saw Lazaro's(leander??) results in Vietnam, pretty impressive. Who trains Patrombon and Lazaro? Are they on the same league with Nino?

At this point Patrombon is the better player he is stronger and has more experience playing in the ITF (having won an ITF singles event in Singapore last year and recently doubles in Hong Kong)... although Lazaro has better strokes, forehand, backhand more fluid he still needs to be more match tough.... Nino is still the better player (he is one year older by the way) and compared to the other two Nino still one or two levels up.

Jesson Patrombon shocked 4th seed Shuichi Sekugichi (ITF ranked no. 18 in the world) 6-2; 3-6; 6-4, his next oponent is V. Munshaw of India who beat Japan's Rikutu Furuta.  Patrombon's win is the biggest upset so far in the tournament considering the Sekuguchi who is playing in his last year as a junior is Japan's no. 1 junior player.  Meanwhile, Alcantara's dismal singles performance continued as he lost today to Korea's Lee Jae Moon ranked 437 in the world.

Jesson Patrombon beat V. Munshaw of India 6-3; 6-3 to enter the Quarterfinal of this Grade A tournament.  In the quarters he will face the talented aussie Jason Kubler who won his last two tournaments in Fiji and Australia without dropping a set. Kubler beat Cheng Peng-Hsieh of Taipei 6-0; 6-1.  For those unfamiliar Cheng is Nino's doubles partner in the Australian Open.

I saw Jason's match vs Munshaw He had no trouble against the indian because the match under control. He will play vs Kubler who is half filipino, Kubler's mother came from negros, He got a big serve but Jason will handle it with his groundstrokes.

Nino now practicing with my team and training hard for the next tournament in Korea

I seems na nawawalan ng confidence si Nino sa singles game niya...minsan nangyayari yan even sa mga top tennis players... I think makakarecover din in time.... although malakas talaga yung koreanong nakalaban niya asa semis na ngayon at maraming mabibigat na tinalo.

I was not able to watch Jason because we practice but I called MT after the match he said Jason can hardly walk due to injury but he let Jason played dahil sayang daw. Anyway, Jason got some experience in this tournament and I hope he can use it for the next tournament in Korea.

Given his physical size, frame, work ethic and his technical skills, IMO he've almost reached his potential. A change of coaching will help marginally. When I saw him play this year I don't think he's at the same level with players of his age group like Barrientos, So or even Tolentino. Nino is mentally wise beyond his years pero not on par physically with the present best juniors. If I were him I'll play D1 college first, buff up then test the pros later on. IMO angel

I still believe it is just a phase... he is still eligible to play in the juniors next year so rather than go to college in the US he should still give ITF juniors another shot.  Its just a matter of confidence really I think that compared to last year his strokes are much better... what desserted him is his instinct to win, his ability to close out matches, his ability to go for his shots when its matters, that was his edge last year when he was winning all those matches last year.

I'm sure he will have some success next year if he plays one more year at the ITF juniors. He should be 18 and more matured compared to his peer group. Juniors is so different from the men's pro division. It's a whole different ball game on the pro tour. Nino just don't have that extra edge or the physical presence to succeed in the men's game. I see that with Cecil, Raymond Sarmiento, Huey or even Arcilla(when he was younger). IMHO

Updates on our Junior Players' Rankings:

1. Alcantara is now ranked 44 (his lowest this year)
2. Patrombon is now 152 (and will probably reach Top 100 by January next year)
3. Lazaro is at 488
4. Kim Ivor Saraza is at 554

Alcantara, Patrombon and Saraza will participate in Asia/Oceania Closed Championship in Korea.  This is a GB1 (higher thank group 1) event which offers 180 points to the champion.

Thanks again Tennis King, Nice to see all our local boys gaining valuable points and experiences. By the way,on the female side, our very own FilAm Denise Dy, is also making waves in the NCAA....
Unfortunately, Kyle Dandan lost in the first round, and Nico Riego de Dios also lost in the early rounds...

Dy Claims ITA Regional Singles Crown
Denise Dy Topples Cardinal Pair To Reach Regional Final

Chan And Dy Surge Into Quarters At ITA Regionals

Oct. 26, 2009

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Washington sophomore Denise Dy completed her historic run to capture the singles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships today at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center. Dy upset top-seeded California All-American Jana Juricova, 6-3, 6-3, to raise the trophy.

The San Jose, Calif. native is the first Husky woman ever to win the Regional crown and qualifies now for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 5-8 in New Haven, Connecticut. She will join Husky teammate Venise Chan at nationals, marking the first time UW has ever qualified two women for the 32-player field.

"I am very, very happy right now. This is a really big tournament but hopefully I can continue on at this level in bigger tournaments to come," said Dy, who was happy to be joining Chan at National Indoors next month. "Venise told me she wanted someone to go with her and that she plays better when she has people there so I guess I used that as motivation. We'll have fun together."

Dy, ranked 58th entering the fall and seeded ninth in the tourney, proved she can compete with the very best the Pac-10 has to offer this weekend, as the Northwest Region includes all the top players from NCAA runner-up California, Stanford, Oregon, and Washington State in addition to UW; five of the nine conference teams. The Northwest Regional was one of 12 Regional tournaments across the country held over the past week.

In today's final, Dy faced Cal's top singles player Juricova, the nation's fourth-ranked singles player and last year's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Juricova had not dropped a set in the whole tournament and only one of her 10 set wins had gone past 6-2. Dy, however, dispatched the top-seed in straight sets.

In the quarterfinals on Sunday, Dy also defeated the second-seed, 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year Hilary Barte of Stanford. Barte is ranked fifth in the nation by the ITA. She also beat 55th-ranked Alexandra Poorta of St. Mary's in the round of 16. With her doubles duties and two three-set singles matches, Dy spent an incredible six and a half hours on the court on Sunday just to get to Monday's final. She said her stamina was her biggest weapon this weekend.
"We're basically playing three matches every day with singles and doubles, so for me being fit was the most important thing," said Dy.

Unfortunately Dy's run in doubles ended one match too soon in the semifinals this morning prior to her singles match. Dy and partner Joyce Ardies fell to the second-seeded Stanford duo of Barte and Burdette, 8-1. Ardies and Dy will hold out hope of an at-large selection to the National Indoor tournament in doubles.

Dy and Chan will head to Yale for the National Indoors from Nov. 5-8. That same weekend, the rest of the Huskies will be in San Diego for the SDSU Fall Classic.

This is a big victory indeed for Denise Dy as Jana Juricova was as high as 253 in the world two years ago and was good enough to be chosen as a member of the Slovak Republic Fed Cup team together with Hantuchova and Cibulkova. I think Denise is playing in the 2 ITF Women's tournaments, PCA open and the SEA Games in Laos this year.

Good for Philippine women's tennis. At least they get to watch her, together with Fernandez play. On the Men's Open, hopefully all the top boys juniors will play(Patrombon, Alcantara, Lazaro,Tan Ho). Hopefully PCA Open wouldn't coincide with the 2 PHINMA ITFs.

Kubler wins Osaka Mayor's Cup

Osaka,26 October 2009
Tennis Australia

Jason Kubler

Sixteen-year-old Queenslander Jason Kubler has won the Grade A Osaka Mayor's Cup in Osaka, his third international singles title for 2009.

Kubler's win is expected to elevate him from his current world junior ranking of 106, to close to the top 50, making him one of the top three sixteen-year-old boys in the world.

The Osaka Mayor's Cup is one of just five ITF Grade A events, and in terms of points awarded, on the same level as the junior Grand Slams. Other Grade A events include the Orange Bowl in the USA, the Casablanca Cup in Morocco, the Italian Open and the Copa Gerdau in Brazil.

Seeded No.11, Kubler overcame No.5 seed and world No.22, Cheng-Peng Hsieh from Chinese Taipei in the third round. He defeated Japanese No.9 seed Yasutaka Uchiyama in the semis and today enjoyed a 6-0 4-6 6-2 victory over No.8 seed Hiroyasu Ehara in the final.

Kubler's win in Japan caps off an amazing year so far. Three weeks ago he led the Optus Australian team to victory in the Junior Davis Cup Final in Mexico without losing a match; in July he won the ITF Northern Territory International, and in August the ITF B2 in Fiji.

Kubler will continue to compete in International junior events in Asia for the next couple of weeks. On his return to Australia he will step up to the men's competition in Tennis Australia Pro Tour events.

Fil-Australian Jason Kubler is the singles champion in the LTAT Junior Championships in Thailand. This is the fourth tournament win in a row for the 16 year old Kubler who is now solidly building his reputation as the player to watch in Australia.

sa eddie herr, orange bowl puwede siya, pero sa copper bowl at kalamazoo hindi siya puwede(dahil foreigner siya). Have to agree with you that Kubler will surely be tested if he plays more in the US or ETA. Are you related to BBulaclac or JBediones, kids who play in 18 and 16 and under boys juniors? I know some FilAms in the PNW area.

yup, laro si dy, at si venice chan(Hong Kong) doon. Nuod ka ng matches nila sa Lloyd Nordstrom this coming spring, high quality matches ang schedule nila against the likes of USC, UCLA and other PAC 10 schools. Galing din ng men's team nila, Their top men's player is from India, Jeevan Nechudniziyan(not sure about the spelling?) and their coach is one time ATP top 20, Mat Anger. The tickets are reasonable and sometimes for free. I think they have a men's tournament this coming week at UW.

ako sa uw next week. medyo nagsawa na ako sa summer season ng
tennis. itong fall, hiking muna kami ni esmi sa bundok, medyo
bawas muna sa tennis malamig na. anyways, meron akong ibang
hilig ngayon. iniisip kong bumili ng air riple or .22 rifle.
gusto ko naman maghunting ng quail or target shooting sa
range.

nagcrabbing kami sa bellingham, swerte nakahuli kami ng sampung
dungeness crab. six and a quarter ang limit size.  naalala ko

lagyan mo ng jalapeno radish at maraming petchay at sabaw
solve ka na.
