Jacob scores two wins in Head Penn

THE Lagman siblings, Julius, Jessica and Jacob, traversed different routes in the Head Penn Olivarez Tennis Championships yesterday at the Olivarez tennis courts.

After three hours of battle, Julius bombed out of contention when he lost to Akio Sy, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, in the Boys 18-Under, while Jessica was clobbered, 0-6, 0-6, by Shanine Olivarez to bow out of the tournament for good.

Fortunately, the sadness brought about by the losses were erased when the youngest of the brood, Jacob, pulled off lopsided victories.

Julius, of Sacred Heart School-Jesuit, endured long rallies to extend the game to a deciding third set of his Boys 18-Under encounter with Sy. However, Sy managed to make the decisive points in the third set to eventually take the victory.

Jessica, on the other hand, the princess in the Lagman household, was booted out of contention in the Girls 16-under by Olivarez, who has been competing in various local and international tournaments. Jessica is practically a newbie and has only concentrated on playing tennis this year.

“Malayo pa lalakbayin ni Princesa. It’s my consolation that she is gaining confidence in playing,” said the Lagmans’ mother Julie.

Jacob retaliated for his siblings’ losses when he scored emphatic wins over Matthew Sicat, 6-0, 6-0 and Kyle Ortega, 6-0, 6-0, to enter the semifinal round of the Boys 12-Under division.

With the win, Jacob of St. Benedict Childhood Learning Center, arranged a semifinal showdown with John Mavrick Ribaya. Jacob is also seeing action in the semifinals of the 14-Under division, where he is set to take on Kim Polero.

Jacob is eyeing retribution as it was the two who handed him a double defeat in the Toby’s netfest. Ribaya defeated Jacob in the 12-under finals, while Polero in 14-under championship. (MCB)
