GUAM — Patrick John Tierro and Johnny Arcilla settled for the men’s doubles runners-up honors Sunday at the close of the 4th Annual Guam International Tennis Open at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa outdoor courts here.
The Filipino pair missed two set points in the first set and then lost a 4-2 lead in the tiebreak to bow to defending champions John James of Australia and Mikael Maatta of the USA, 6-7 (5), 4-6.
The loss capped a frustrating week for the Filipinos, whose bids in the singles events also bombed out with Tierro losing his quarterfinals match, Arcilla relinquishing his men’s title in the semifinals and Czarina Mae Arevalo also leaving her women’s singles throne in the quarterfinals.
Three other Filipinos — Adelo Abadia, Michelle Pang and Trudy Gine Amoranto — absorbed early losses.
Abadia, after a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Guam’s Bill Camacho, was booted out in the second round by second seed Lee Chul-hee of South Korea, 7-5, 6-1, while Pang lost to second seed Thi Kim Loi Tran of Vietname in the first round, 6-2, 64, and Amoranto bowed to Japanese Chiho Kobayashi, 1-6, 6-7 (3).
Pang and Arevalo were ousted in the second round of the women’s doubles while Amoranto, paired with Guam’s Vivien Lee, lost in the semifinals.
