Carpal tunnel syndrome from playing tennis?  Hmmmn.  Well, CTS is brought about largely by the impingement of the main wrist nerve and the tendons inside it. I can only guess that an inflammation of the wrist may be the culprit here, exacerbated perhaps by improper stroke mechanics and/or improper equipment. But if you're experiencing the symptoms only after playing, I would guess it's a minor wrist strain. Ang CTS kasi, the symptoms can appear even if you're at rest.

Improper or wristy strokes can put a lot of stress on the wrist.  A racquet that’s too light, too stiff, improperly balanced, strung with a stiff string like polyester, high-tension strings or a combination of these can also lead to wrist problems.

It would be best to have this condition examined by your doctor to see what the problem really is in order to mitigate it. We want you on the court, not off it. Hehehe

As far as your strokes are concerned, have it evaluated by a knowledgeable instructor (the PTO has quite a few) and see if there are any hitches in your strokes that are putting a lot of undue stress on your wrist.

As far as your equipment is concerned, if you can give me the brand and model of your racquet, your racquet’s grip size and the measurement of your actual grip size, the name and gauge of the string you are using, your string tension, and how much time before you have your racquet re-strung, I can make a thumbnail analysis of your equipment to see if it is indeed a contributing factor.

astig po ah...kakabilib Grin

nywei, before more than 2 weeks ko naramdaman ung strain sa wrist ko..so tinigil ko muna maglaro for almost 2 months..then lately after playing ko na lang nararamdaman...next day wala na...

my racket is an oversize wilson hyper hammer 4 1/4 ung wrist size. my actual grip size is a little over 4 1/4

bout sa strings..mejo wala po ako idea kasi may string na ung racket nung binili ko...di ko pa din sya napapa re-strung but i'm already planning...

So pre-existing na pala ito tapos bumalik nung naglaro ka uli after 2 months, pero after playing mo lang nararamdaman. In any case, I strongly suggest pa-consult ka sa doctor para mabigyan ng accurate diagnosis. Baka hindi lang tennis ang contributing factors. Better to be sure para walang guesswork at haka-haka. If the doctor can eliminate other possible contributing factors (baka overworked ang kamay mo sa trabaho, hehehe), then sa strokes mo nga yan and/or sa equipment.

Speaking of equipment, ano ang specific model ng Wilson mo? Marami kasing Hyper Hammer. Usually, there is a number to differentiate one from the other. For example, HyperHammer 5.3, HyperHammer 6.2, etc.  Sa mga HyperHammer models, the numbers range from 2.3 to 6.6. Nakatatak naman sha, typically on the shaft (between the grip and the head).

Ok, based upon the benchmark specs, I would be inclined to think that your racquet could be a contributing factor.  I haven’t seen you play and I haven’t examined your racquet so understand that my comments are generally-speaking based upon benchmark racquet specifications. Here’s the breakdown:

Weight: 249 g
Balance: 8 pts. head heavy

It’s a lightweight racquet.  There’s not much racquet mass, so there is not a lot of material to absorb shock. The head heavy balance indicates that more of the racquet’s mass is in the head area. This is typical of the Hammer models.  Both of these can contribute shock.  The amount of shock, however, will be directly proportional to the speed of your swing, i.e., faster swing, more shock.  The thing is, because the racquet is light, you have to swing harder (or faster) to add some pace to your shots.  In other words, what your racquet lacks in weight, you will have to make up for in swing speed. This won’t matter much if you have short strokes and/or slow swing speed, but it won’t get any better if you have wristy shots because shots like these adds more strain on your wrist.

Head size: 110 sq.in. oversize
Grip size: 4 ¼
String pattern: 16 mains x 20 crosses

The oversized head and the open string pattern help in reclaiming some of the potential power that the light weight takes away.  Although the oversized head gives you a larger sweetspot, it also generates a higher torque on off-center hits. Torque is the force that causes the racquet to twist in your hand. Torque should not be that much of an issue if you are consistently hitting the sweetspot.  Otherwise, there are a couple of things that would concern me.  At 4 ¼, the racquet’s grip is relatively small with regard to its head size. Potentially, the torque, or the gripping force necessary to keep the racquet from twisting, usually increases as the grip size decreases. You also mentioned that your measured grip size is larger than 4 ¼.  Your larger measured grip on a smaller racquet grip size can cause you to unconsciously grip tighter than normal in order to keep the racquet from twisting. The tighter the grip, the more strain on the wrist. You can either have your grip re-sized to a 4 3/8, build up your current grip with a thick overgrip, or switch to a racquet with a 4 3/8 grip to mitigate this issue.

Length: 27.75 in.
Stiffness: 70 RDC

On the upside, a longer racquet gives you an extended reach. On the downside, a longer racquet means a wider swing arc. The racquet travels in an arc in a normal swing. It takes a split second longer for the head of a stretch racquet to get from point A to point B. Thus, you may have to swing faster to get the head of a stretch racquet around on your strokes in order to keep your timing. It is a stiff racquet at 70 RDC. This higher stiffness is also designed to reclaim some of the potential power lost because of the light weight. Generally, higher stiffness means increased shock. Unfortunately, your racquet doesn’t have any shock-dampening technology that is common in current models.  I’m not too concerned about this, though. Your racquet was introduced in 2002 so it definitely has softened up a little bit.

String type: Huh
Tension: Huh

I can’t even begin to guess what the strings are and what the tension is, but after being on your racquet for this length of time, it’s no longer relevant. What’s relevant is the fact that most definitely, your strings have deteriorated to the point where it’s doing more harm than good. Bear in mind that it’s the strings that impact the ball. The strings absorb some of the shock at impact then channels the shock to the racquet’s frame. The amount of shock depends upon the elastic properties of the string. Strings that are more elastic absorb more shock. I’m sure that given the length of time that the strings have been on your racquet, your string’s elasticity are pretty much gone. This, plus all of the shock-conducive properties outlined above may very well be a contributing factor to wrist strain. I would recommend that you have your racquet re-strung at the earliest.

This thumbnail equipment analysis and your doctor’s diagnosis should give you some options to alleviate your pain, but a stroke analysis is also important so that hitches in your strokes, if any, can be corrected before chronic physical problems occur.  Strengthening exercises can also go a long way in helping you tolerate the physical rigors of the sport.

glad i made u laugh bossing max Cool

however, tennis can also be a cause of CTS..
and frequent use of keyboard may just be a myth
see the link below

http://www.hss.edu/conditions_15001.asp

also, it's not just because of wristy strokes but also the pressure over the region of the wrist and the base of the palm

i have experienced this and thought i too have a CTS.., may nagpadala kasi sa email ko..
but i was diagnosed and the doc said its wrist tendinitis.... may pinainom xa sa akin to help keep the pain at bay...

all seems lost kasi tlgang pabalik balik xa... ang nakakatuwa dito.., sinabihan ako ng friend ko na pmunta sa isang manghihilot.. parang x-ray nga yung mata nya eh.. kita daw nya yung mga ugat na bali-baliko.. pinagtutulak nya yun saying na binabalik nya lang sa dati.. after the (errrr) procedure... nawala yung sakit!!! and i can play without wrist support.. hindi na bumabalik yung pain.... galing ano..

true story po ito.  Wink

Oldskul,
Cool

Altodds,

Oldskul,

si nino nandyan pa sa maynila? kasama pangalan niya sa pinadala na lists na mga filipino players na sasali sa camp ko. Siya nga pala may bonus ka kay redstone dahil nag champion si nino. Galing sa akin wala dahil mahina ka sa akin.he!he!he!
