Hi there,

Any advice you can share to me?  You see I have this problem of cramps.  I really sweat a lot.   I've been told to load on potassium (madami sa banana), take gatorade 30 minutes before the game pero ganito pa rin - cramps after about 2 hours.  Ako yung tipong malakas magpawis, my shirt is soaking wet talaga and I can't do without a headband - pupunta talaga pawis sa mata ko (mahapdi yun) .

Any tips guys?

eastern, instead of gatorade, try to supply your body with enough water before and during the game, hope this eliminate the cramps. as for the sweat, aside from headband, maglagay ka din ng wrist band (left and right) para pwede mo ipunas sa noo mo for the extra sweat na di kaya ng headband. ayaw mo magcap? try mo din  Wink

Greetings X:

Well the basics, proper hydration before during and after any sports activity to supply your body with electrolytes coupled with adequate stretching of the muscles with warm-ups and cooldowns.

I used to get cramps a lot before nung nagbabasketball ako. For me the way to prevent it is to push your legs always to the limit.

proper streching before the game, pag hindi parin nag work, try mo magpa bloodchem, sometimes, pag mataas uric acid mo, di lang joints mo naaapektuhan, pati din muscles thats y we  frequently get muscle cramps, may mga gamot naman para bumaba uric acid if ever this is the problem, hope this helps!  Wink

Ganito din ang problema ko madalas.

Meron ako bad experience last month noong makipalo ako sa 5&6ers kapartner ko si maam wina and we are leading 6-2 bigla ako nag cramp, nakakahiya. Grin

Ang ginagawa ko ngayon pag alam ko na mag cramp nako, i will lessen my movements kaso naman napupuna ng partner ko na hindi ako humahabol sa bola. Grin

Ang advice sakin ay magbawas ng timbang at take plenty of fluids during the game.

Darkwing,

warm-up - check
cooldown - check
stretching - baka kulang pa ang streching ko.
hydration during play - marami (I consume 1 liter water in an hour with gatorade pa)
hyrration before playing - this may be too small (kasi mahirap uminom ng hindi pa naman nauuhaw.  Ayoko nga masyado mag load sa Gatorade kasi me highblood na tayo.

but I'll give these tips a shot and share with you what happens.

I go to the gym 3 times a week other than my weekend tennis so kulang pa kaya yun?  but I know people who are overweight pero they can last maybe even 4 hours (doubles nga lang).  They may be tired but no cramps.  Kaya hanggang ngayon, I'm still with no answer with this cramps.

Will see how it goes and update ko kayo.

Besides all the medical/scientific suggestions already mentioned, let me ask, gigil ka bang maglaro? Kasi kapag gigil masyado, may tendency maging tight ang buong katawan. The few times I've had cramps DURING a match were in one club tournament when a semis berth was on the line, and in recreational matches that are super-closely fought. If this is  the case, then maybe you should learn to take things easier during play. Take a short water/towel break every odd game. Change shirts between sets. And in general, lighten up. Don't delay the game, but don't rush. Unless you are a professional, play is supposed to be RECREATION, not a life-or-death situation.

Also, make time to relax around the court after playing. Do your stretching routine, gently. Put your feet up. Sip a cool drink. Make kwento with the other players. Play a game of chess or dama with the trainers and pulot boys. Let your body temperature stabilize. Hang out for at least half an hour before getting into your car and/or going home. Then do some final but gentle stretches before bedtime so you won't cramp during sleep.

yes SGPT kasi problema sakin, may blood sa urine ko, and it gives me backpains, kaya natigil narin ako sa pag inom because of my kidney, tapos my sister told me na nagcocompensate ang knees/legs when u have a backpain, so i just thought na baka pwedeng ma cramps din because of this, napag kabit kabit ko lang naman mga expert opinion ng aking ate at ama  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

does it give you backpains? particularly on your lowerback? dun kasi kidneys natin, uu bro, i think mas magandang bawasan mo na pag inom, ill ask my dad on what to do and who to consult, lots of fluids kailangan bro, our body needs sodium, yun ang nawawala pag nagpapawis tayo, na hindi narereplenish ng water, softdrinks, gatorade, juices mas maganda, mas thirst quenching kasi tubig, after ng tubig juice naman or gatorade, just like what the PRO's do  Grin

Thanks Doc Jov   Grin

I just came from a long (1 month) lay-off from tennis.  Bumalik ako last weekend lang and after 2 hours of playing - cramps simultaneously on both legs quads and calves.
I'm thinking, it might have been due to the long layoff.  I did warm up though.  Had 2 bottles of gatorade (kulang pa ata).  Nagkakaron lang ako ng chance to drink after the set is over.  Next time, I will really drink before my turn to serve.

Thanks again for the inputs.

Do you stretch AFTER playing? Stretching after play is just as, if not more important than doing it before.

Also, overexertion is a main cause of cramps. Baka you're simply pushing your body past its limits, and you are not sensitive to your body, hence you don't know at what point your body is actually tired. If that's the case, I suggest you get yourself into better shape in order to play tennis, not the other way around.

usually cramps are signs of electrolites imbalance. (sodium, pottasium, and calcium) all you need to do is just replace your fluid loss, and of course stretching before and after a game.

I was just reading about this...

http://www.active.com/nutrition/Articles/Fluid_Facts_for_Athletes.htm

Imagine sweating about 1-2 liters per hour  Shocked

With that, I need to hydrate at least 2-4 liters of sports drink (with sodium, potassium and calcium) per hour to replenish the lost electrolytes.  Grabe, ang dami nun ah!

]

Ang cramps po kasi caused by lack of salt in the body. This is caused by excessive sweating. If you drink po kasi too much water and not enough salt madadilute ung salt then cramps will occur. GATORADE complete po yan. Try eating food rin po with salt.  Wink

Hindi na ako nag cramps for the last 10-15 times na naglaro ako.

Good Morning!

Oo effective sakin. Everytime maglaro ako I sweat a lot to the extent na pati undi at upper socks ko eh nababasa. Then proper streching before ang after the game.

Kudos!

ako din malakas magpawis. so idrink lots of water and gatorade to keep me hydrated. nakakatulong ang stretching mga 15 mins before getting into a game. i also subject myself into weight training (medyo malaki kc ako ngaun Grin) with a lot of focus on the legs. para masanay sya sa heavy strain. so medyo sanay sya sa bugbugang takbo.

One more thing.

yup! stretching and body conditioning is a great help... if playing at sunny and hot weather conditions -drink hydrite tablets mixed with water. this is more cheaper than other sports drink.

dun naman po sa drinking side, advice po ng lolo ko na tennis player before, he used drink a glass of ORESOL (oral rehydration solution, OTC naman to sa drug stores), then normal water intake syempre in between breaks. I dont know, baka 'myth' lang nya to. But I tried it like 4x before playing basketball nung naglalaro pa ko ung HS and college days ko sa school hehe. nakikiinom pa nga mga teammates ko.

Try to relax while playing.  Being too tense tightens up the muscles.

sports drinks gaya ng gatorade or powerade. they really work and it got me through those very hot summers in vegas. lost 40 lbs. in the process.
pag uwi ko sa may diyan i hope i can drop at least 20.
