I don't see it in the forseeable future in the Philippines, unless that prodigous kid comes from a well endowed family. Kahit talented yung bata, if he's sponsored by the government, wala pa rin. It has to come from the private sector and that kid would be starting and exposed internationally at a young age. ITF and  USTA studies said that it costs about $30000 and up annually to produce top level player and that is still not a guarantee. Reality bite  Sad

Hopefully, time will come that the home grown talents will have what it take to win such important tournament. It's hard to gamble especially when you are up against great players on the other side of the net.

Winning for the country was the main goal and YOU DID IT AGAIN! Congrats again to Team Philippines for a job well done!

I've heard from a very reliable source and a good friend from the tennis circuit that the government and some private sectors joined their efforts to make it happen. I'm sure that they know what to do and their taking it one step at a time. Rumors said that there is US$30,000+ for Nino's annual budget. Let's hope for the best interest of the country. It might be a make or break but there will always be another chance.  Wink Wink Wink

US$30,000+? What is so sad is isang SUV lang o kalahati lang ng presyo ng isang luxury vehicle ng Senator yan.  Big gamble?  I'd like to think it's a better investment and some government official growing a small conscience and decided to give a little back  Lips Sealed

Actually yang budget is maliit palang yan.
Halos ganyan ang budget ng isang Junior(for year's budget) dyan sa Pinas... Local pa lang yun ah..... Grin Grin Grin
What more for Nino going abroad or getting some training to hone his skills???... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

And if he intends to get some trainings from IMG Academy(Nick Bollettieri), they have programs  for a week that range from 1.2K to 3K USD. So with that kind of budget medyo kulang yun at gutom kapag nagtipid siya..... Grin Grin Grin

What Nino needs is good coaching, hopefully from a foreign coach who knows how it feels to compete internationally. The worse advice you can possibly give him is "ok lang yan bata ka pa at least dikit yung laban" because at this point if he really wants to make it big he should already start winning big matches and loosing to a lesser oponent such as the Pakistani in the Davis Cup yesterday is almost unforgivable.

At this stage, money is not an issue for nino but his ability to play in the next level. He's proven himself an excellent doubles player by winning Australian Open juniors but his singles play is questionable. But credit should also be given to his excellent doubles partners for his doubles results. His singles play results are attrocious. I'm waiting to see for a breakthrough in singles if he really have what it takes. I don't think we can blame his sponsors at all. They have been generous and supportive. Sad to say the ball is in nino's court now. Let's not forget Tierro and other deserving kids.
