Dandan, Dy sa Mitsubishi juniors netfest (from Journal Online)
“The Mitsubishi International juniors tournament has a tradition of providing tough competitions and breeding ground of future world champions, kaya it’s not easy to win this tournament,” wika ni tournament director Ajay Pathak sa PSA Forum kahapon sa main function room ng Pantalan Restaurant sa Manila. “This year, a lot of foreign entries are coming, especially sa women’s side, kaya medyo mabigat ang laban,” dagdag niya.

Mitsubishi Lancer ITF Junior Circuit Barte leads RP bets to 2nd round
By kristel satumbaga
SIX LOCAL bets, including Ralph Kevin Barte, bested their rivals yesterday to advance into the next round at the start of the 18th Mitsubishi Lancer ITF Junior Circuit at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts.
The 17-year-old Barte, the second highest ranked Filipino after Kyle Dandan, brought down Francis Alcantara, 6-4, 6-5, ret. to set up a second-round meeting against Eugen Bradzil of Slovakia.
Alcantara retired due to exhaustion.
Also advancing were Raymond Villarette, Felix Assad, Pablo Olivarez II, Christian Canlas and Mark Balce.
Bradzil drew first-round bye along with the 16 seeded players, including 13th-ranked Dandan.
"I’ll take it one game at a time para hindi ako masyadong ma-pressure at ma-intimidate ng mga kalaban ko," said Barte.
Villarette quickly marched into the second round by blanking compatriot Jose Lorenzo Opulencia, 6-0, 6-0.
While it was ho-hum of a match in the first round, Villarette will have his hands full in the second round as he goes up against top seed John Patrick Smith of Australia.
"He’s the top seed so it’s going to be an uphill battle. But I will try my best," said Villarette.
Assad downed Paul Magaway, 6-1, 6-3, to arrange a duel against 12th seed Aussie Bernard Tomic.
Equally impressive were Olivarez, who triumphed over James Canete, 6-1, 6-3; Canlas who clobbered Arthur Tafalla, 6-3, 6-1, and Balce who whipped Carlos Espedido.
In the second round, Canlas will face second seed Stephen Donald of Australia, while Olivarez tackles 14th-ranked Rasmus Jonasson of Sweden.
But all eyes will on the showdown of Dandan and Balce.
"Last year ko na ito sa junior circuit kaya gusto ko sana makarating man lang ng finals para maganda naman ang pagtatapos ko dito," said the 17-year-old Dandan.
But other Filipino netters were not so lucky as Pemrik Alima, Leander Lazaro, John Francis Largo, Russel Arcilla Jr., Kim Saraza and Mark Jimenez were beaten by their more superior foreign rivals.

Dy, Dandan escape spate of RP losses
The Philippine Star 03/29/2007
Fil-Am Denise Dy and Kyle Dandan came away with victories in varying fashions to emerge the last Filipino survivors as six other RP bets bowed out in the second day of the 18th Mitsubishi Lancer ITF Junior Circuit at the Rizal Tennis Center.
Dy wavered in the second set but pulled through just the same as she eked out a 6-2, 7-5 victory over American Krista Damico, while Dandan,18, overwhelmed compatriot Mark Jaypee Balce, 6-2, 6-0, to barge into the third round of this weeklong Grade 1 event.
While Dandan faced little resistance against Balce, Dy had her hands full against Damico.
After taking the opening set and a 4-1 lead in the second, the 2005 Manila Southeast Asian Games veteran lost her focus, enabling Damico to seize a 5-4 lead and move within a game from sending the match into a decider.
But Dy recovered her bearing and rhythm in time, taking the next three games and eventually sealing the win with a solid forehand winner.
"I thought I played bad and lost focus," said Dy, who came off disappointing stints in Bangkok and Malaysia where she failed to get past the first round.
"But this kind of situation usually defines how tough you are, if you can adjust to it," she said. "I adjusted well, that’s why I won."
However, the rest of the local bets – Raymond Villarete, Felix Assad, Pablo Olivarez II, Ralph Kevin Barte, Christian Canlas and Conchita Zoleta – dropped their respective matches.
Villarete bowed to top seed John Smith of Australia, 6-3, 6-2; Assad fell to Aussie Bernard Tomic, 6-1, 6-0; Olivarez succumbed to Swede Rasmus Jonasson, 6-1, 7-6(3)l Barte absorbed a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Slovak Eugen Bradzil; Canlas was bundled out by Stephen Donald of Australia, 6-1, 6-0; and Zoleta dropped a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand. – Joey Villar

Dy, Dandan pull off upsets, enter q’finals By Joey Villar The Philippine Star 03/30/2007
Ninth seed Denise Dy and Kyle Dandan got going when the goings got tough and pulled off a pair of stirring victories over their higher ranked rivals to barge into the quarterfinal round of the 18th Mitsubishi Lancer ITF Junior Circuit at the Rizal Tennis Center.
Dy stayed focused and hung tough in the face of Thai Noppawan Lertcheewakarn’s fightback, completing a hard-earned 6-3, 7-5 victory over her seventh ranked rival while Dandan, ranked 13th in the men’s side, dished out a superb all around game to oust third seed Peng Hsien-Ying of Chinese Taipei, 6-4, 6-3, before an appreciative hometown crowd.
"Unlike yesterday (Wednesday), I didn’t doze off a second, I was just full of concentration in this game," said Dy, who hopes to win this weeklong event and gain ITF ranking points.
Dy, who booted out American Krista Damico, 6-2, 7-5, faces Chang Kai-Chen in the quarters. The third seeded Taiwanese downed Australian No. 16 Sally Peers, 6-4, 6-3.
Dandan, on the other hand, takes on the big-hitting Slovenian Borut Puc, who shrugged off a tentative start to fashion out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Swedish Milos Sekulic.
Against Chen, Dy will enjoy some kind of an edge and momentum as she beat the Taiwanese in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, in the first round of this same tournament last year.
"I beat her last year, hopefully I could beat her again," said Dy, who thus duplicated her quarterfinal finish last year.
The win, however, didn’t come easy as Dy had to rally from early deficits in both sets before seizing control.
Broken in the third game to trail, 1-2, Dy battled back with her solid baseline game and went on to take five of the next six games to win the opening set.
Dy then rallied from 1-4 down in the second set, breaking her 15-year-old Thai rival in the seventh game to tie the count at 4-all.
Lertcheewakarn held serve in the next game to regain the lead,

End of the road for RP tennisters By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA (Manila Bulletin)
KYLE JOSHUA Dandan and Dennise Dy failed to sustain the momentum of their earlier big wins to bow out of the singles semifinals picturt yesterday in the 18th Mitsubishi International Juniors Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The 17-year-old Dandan, the 13th seed, was bundled out by unseeded Slovakian Borut Puc, 6-2, 6-3, while the ninth seed Dy lost her touch in the third set to absorb a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 beating from third seed Taiwanese Yang Kai-chen.
The twin losses put out the last of the Filipinos in the singles competitions although Dandan and Dy remained alive in the doubles war.
Dandan came back in the afternoon to team up with Japanese Tadayuki Longhi for a 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinals win over the Thai pair of Peraikat Siriluetaiwattana and Kittipong Wachiramanowong while Dy, along with partner Jessy Rompies of Indonesia, vent her ire on the top-seeded tandem of Sacha Jones of New Zealand and Elena Chernykova of Russia, 6-4, 6-1.
The doubles victories, however, failed to soothe the Filipinos’ thirst for a singles title.
"Maganda naman ang nilaro ko, pero mas maganda ang sa kanya (Puc)," said Dandan who is seeing action in his last Mitsubishi Lancer tilt. "Hindi ko talaga ma-break ang mga serve niya. Ang lakas."
"Napanood ko na siyang maglaro noon. Ang laki ng improvement ng laro niya kaya medyo nagulat din ako," Dandan admitted.
The world No. 211 Puc, who dispatched 10th seed Brendan McKenzie of Australia in the third round, was unstoppable from the baseline and arranged a semifinals date with Australian top seed John Patrick Smith, who advanced after compatriot Andrew Thomas retired after losing the first set, 3-6, and trailing, 0-1, in the second.
Also gaining semifinals seats in the boys’ singles were No. 12 Bernard Tomic of Australia who rallied past Kittipong, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, and unseeded Silvio Dadic of Croatia, who ousted second seed Stephen Donald of Australia, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
For Dy, it was a big letdowen as after losing the first set, she racked up six straight games to force the third set only to lose her touch and trail, 0-4, to give the Taiwanese the headway to the win.
Khang faces No. 10 Tyra Calderwood of Australia, who came back from a first set loss to beat Zijun Yang, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Completing the girls’ singles semifinals cast were eighth seed Ling Zhang , who ousted the top-seeded Jones, 6-4, 7-6 (5), and Canadian Anne Voicu, who beat No. 12 Brittany Sheed of Australia, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-2.

Smith pulls through; HK bet shines
By June Navarro Inquirer Last updated 02:57am (Mla time) 04/02/2007
MANILA, Philippines -- John Patrick Smith of Australia finally nailed a breakthrough win in the junior circuit after clinching the boys’ singles crown in the 18th Mitsubishi Lancer International Tennis Championship Sunday at the sun-baked Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Smith broke the power-serving but unseeded Silvio Dadic of Croatia four times to prevail, 6-4, 6-4, and secure his first-ever crown in after 20 or so tournaments.
“He’s (Dadic) tough. I didn’t expect to beat him in two sets,” said Smith, who earned 150 ITF ranking points in the week-long tournament that drew 64 players from around the globe.
Hong Kong’s Zhang Ling captured the girls’ title with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Chang Kai-chen of Chinese-Taipei.
Ranked eighth, Zhang dispatched the third-seeded Chang in one hour and eight minutes after earlier squeezing past top seed Sacha Jones of New Zealand in the quarterfinals and Canada’s Ann Christcan Voicu in the semifinals.
Smith, who bowed out of the quarterfinals of the same tournament last year, used his Manila sojourn as a springboard to the Japan Open to be held in Nagoya starting on Tuesday.
“I’ll catch the last flight tonight (Sunday night) and hopefully get some rest before going back into competition,” said Smith, a 6-3, 6-1 winner over unseeded Borut Puc of Slovenia in the semifinals.
Smith, ranked 17th among the world juniors, finished strong in both sets as Dadic lapsed into errors on the big points.
The Croatian tied the count in the second set at 3-all in a bid to extend the match.
But Smith, unleashing a pair of aces, held serve to pull ahead and then broke in the next game with several accurate baseline returns, 5-3.
Dadic closed to within 4-5 but Smith was not to be denied, ending the match with a blistering serve that his rival returned wide.
