What are the basic drills to improve your footwork? I have trouble hitting deep baseline balls. I tend to hit with my body leaning backwards and using my back foot.

I'm not sure if its footwork that you need for that.  If you're leaning backwards to hit a deep shot it's because you're trying to give yourself more room to make the shot.  But that's ineffective because you're trying to hit the ball behind your hitting zone and you're off balance too because you're leaning back.

What you need is to develop your TIMING by hitting the ball ON THE RISE and hitting it IN FRONT of you in your hitting zone.

So to resist the temptation to lean backwards I would recommend this drill for you.  Stand between the baseline and the service line and practice receiving serves from there.  Avoid leaning backwards and try to hit the ball on the rise and in front.

Another drill is to stand on the baseline and have somebody keep feeding you balls that are close to your feet.

The trick to hitting the ball on the rise and in front of you is not to have a big backswing, instead use a shorter backswing almost like a half-volley shot.

Hope that helps.

this is true! i saw an old video of agassi practicing with a ball machine. puro on the rise ang drills nya. even on short swings dapat you can generate power specially on balls that land near your feet

It's the anticipation on the shot of your oponent. Kung deep yung tira niya on my part short back swing and use the phase of the ball for your power.

During play or rally, try mo ito. If you're always "camped" 2 feet outside the baseline,  give more space between you and the baseline about 3 to 5 feet(but depends on how you're comfortable with..). Just be quick on short balls once this happens..... Grin Grin Grin

Not necessarily, tama yung kapatid KUNG may time ka umatras, like if the ball is parang topspin semi-lob na deep, you have plenty of time na umatras para dun.  But if you don't have time, it's better to just catch it on the rise.

The key is to read and anticipate the ball coming to you before it crosses the net and then react accordingly.

Thanks! Most of the time I have trouble kasi sa mga low fast shots that are aimed at my feet eh mabagal nga ako so kahit may time pa man hindi talaga ako makakaatras. hehehe Smiley

kung aatrasan mo yung bola, wag kang tatabakbo paatras sabay swing mahirap gawin yun..turn ka sideways then side step pa paatras...

Ah let me try that... It really sucks when you have bad footwork and also slow at the same time... Sad

supa, ox lang din na atrasan bola kc nakikita ko din sa mga pros na ginagawa din nila eto. have you seen the rolex commercial where federer moves back off the baseline for a forehand preparation? yun ang classic example!  Grin Cheesy
