MANILA, Philippines -Johnny Arcilla, the Philippines’ top netter, seeks to solidify his No. 1 ranking as he competes in the 1st Metro Open People's Tennis Championship which starts Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The tournament is a Grade A event featuring the country's top tennis aces and fast-rising young guns vying for the P60,000 champion’s purse and 600 Philta ranking points.
Beyond the prize money, though, the top-seeded Arcilla hopes to win the event to fortify his slot in the RP Davis Cup team that will battle Hong Kong in the first round of the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II on March 6 to 8 in Hong Kong.
Fresh from conquering the PCA Open last year, Arcilla is expected to breeze past the first round as he plays wild card entry Johnwill Baldonado in one of six matches set at 9 am.
Another big name, second seed and Davis Cupper Patrick John Tierro, takes the court at 11 a.m. against Arcilla's younger brother, Russel Arcilla Jr.
Leading the fresh faces is Jeson Patrombon, who is considered as one of the futures of Philippine tennis.
Patrombon, fresh from competing in three ITF Juniors Championships in Bangladesh, faces qualifier Romel Openiano.
Openiano made it to the main draw by topping Monday's qualifying event with victories over Ricky Cultura, 8-2, Aaron Empleo, 8-1, and Jandrick De Castro, 8-4.
Also hurdling the qualifiers to reach the main draw were Christian Carlo Canlas and Nguyen Tuan.
Canlas disposed of Ernesto Baquirin, 8-2, Reynaldo Pacheco Jr., 8-0, and Nic Fernandez, 8-6, while Nguyen, father of former girls’ under-14 No. 1 netter Tamitha, toppled Dennis Famis, 8-2, Alberto Gomez, 8-0, and Noel Zosa, 8-7.
Women's singles action will also commence Tuesday but the top eight seeds, headed by No. 1 Bambi Zoleta and No. 2 Michelle Pang, took a first round bye.
Veteran Ma. Regina Santiago faces Steffi Dizon, Kirstie Barraquias meets Ivy Kristel De Castro, Jennelyn Magpayo plays Marinel Rudas, and Tamitha Nguyen meets July Javelosa in the Tuesday’s women's singles matches.
The women's titlist in the tournament will win P25,000 while men's and women's doubles champions will claim P15,000 and P8,000, respectively.
All champions will also receive 600 Philta ranking points. - GMANews.TV

From GMANEWS.tv
MANILA, Philippines – A spot in the Philippine Davis Cup team will be at stake for the Metro Open People’s Championship which starts Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) Davis Cup coordinator Randy Villanueva said that aside from receiving P60,000 as top prize, the men’s champion will get a seat in the Philippine Davis Cup team when the RP netters battle Hong Kong on March 6 to 8 in the first round of the Asia-Oceania Group II competitions slated in Hong Kong.
Philta conceptualized the Metro Open People’s Championship as a tournament in which tennis enthusiasts can donate any amount of money to be used as prize money for the players.
Tennis patron Jean Henri Lhuillier matched the donations giving the total amount of cash money to P302,000.
Eight spots are at stake in Monday’s qualifying round with the qualifiers joining 52 other entrants and four wildcard holders.
The Grade A Philta tournament proper starts on Tuesday with the men’s and women’s singles and doubles.
The women’s singles winner will receive P25,000 while the men’s and women’s doubles titlist will get P15,000 and P8,000. – GMANews.TV

yun ata ang purpose nung organizers ng tournament. kung malayo narating mo then you deserve to be in the team. this will be an opportunity to those who have no ranking but can beat philta's seeded players. as i understand it, kung tinalo mo sila, pasok ka sa team. kaso, paano yung mga nasa malalayo na magagaling pero walang means to join this.

Share ko lang guys ung nakita kong letter sa facebook from Mr. Randy Villanueva. It's about how he conceptualize the tournament. We should support these kind of projects para lalong umayos at lumago ung tennis sa Pinas (medyo mahaba ung email so hinga kayo ng malalim hehe):
----
December 16, 2008
Dear Tennis Friends and Philippine Sports Enthusiasts:
For the past 20 years, the biggest tennis tournament in the Philippines is the PCA OPEN or The Philippine Columbian Association Open. As a Columbiano, I am very proud of this tournament and I have fond memories of this tournament in the past whether as a spectator, a participant, or as an Organizing Committee member in 2002.
Most people think that the PCA OPEN is organized by the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA), but the truth is the PCA OPEN, since it started, was always organized, supported and more importantly sponsored by the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Members. The PCA OPEN is an event supported and sanctioned by PHILTA. PCA and PHILTA have a very good and successful working relationship in the PCA OPEN especially because the past 2 presidents of PHILTA were also past Presidents of PCA like Col. Salvador Andrada and Mr. Luis “Boy” Mendoza & another former PHILTA President is also the past Chairman of the board of PCA, Mr. Manuel Misa.
Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) is not as fancy and expensive as compared to other fellow Proprietary Country Clubs in Metro Manila like Manila Polo Club, Quezon City Sports Club, Alabang Country Club, Palms Country Club, Valle Verde Country Club, Makati Sports Club just to name a few, but it has a more colorful history because the club was a center of campaign for Philippine Independence under the leadership of President Manuel L. Quezon. It was also the headquarters of the Congress for Philippine Independence in 1943, now this type of history is another story altogether.
In Philippine Tennis, Columbianos continue to make history by hosting a lot of our important Davis Cup Ties and by hosting the PCA OPEN. Not only does the PCA Open give the biggest prize money in tennis, but it also organizes all types of tennis playing categories starting with the Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles, as well as the 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 and under boys and girls singles and doubles, the interschool team tennis of NCAA and UAAP Teams (boys and girls), and the Men’s and Women’s interclub team tennis. That’s an unprecedented 20 categories all in one grand event: the PCA OPEN.
If you think that’s awesome, you will be amazed at how the PCA OPEN is run and organized. The PCA OPEN for the past 27 years is sponsored by the club members. Each member is assessed P300.00 every year and this assessed money covers the prize money of the tournament amounting to approximately P500,000.00. The other expenses of the tournament covered by this are the court fees, lights, court maintenance, etc., which approximately costs another P500,000.00.
Imagine if other bigger clubs in Metro Manila can duplicate what the PCA OPEN does every year, I’m almost sure that we will have more talented tennis players and more world beaters like CECIL MAMIIT and FELIX BARRIENTOS, most probably we will be in the WORLD GROUP of the Davis Cup with that kind of talent and maybe a Manny Pacquiao of Tennis.
This brings me to my dream project of trying to organize another tournament to compliment the PCA OPEN but instead of only Columbianos being assessed, I would like to ask my fellow tennis players, either competitive or club players, tennis fans and sports enthusiasts to donate to this tournament project. Everybody’s help is welcome, we even encourage donors to be part of the organizing committee.
I will be asking the help of the Philippine Tennis Association, through its accountant Mr. Cesar San Juan and administrative officer Loida Mallare, since PHILTA has a system already and has a lot of experience in organizing big tennis events, handling big finances like the Mitsubishi International Juniors (19years), and the yearly Women’s Satellite for the past 10years. Plus I don’t know anyone else who will be willing to help in an event such as this.
I know that a lot of people have misgivings about PHILTA, especially a lot of people think that PHILTA is wasting a lot of taxpayers money, since they think this is a government agency that has millions of budget coming from the government.
PHITA is a non-government organization that is basically assigned by the ITF to represent them in the Philippines, whatever money they spend, they raise that on their own. Sometimes PHILTA does get support from the government through the Philippine Sports Commission but this support most of the time goes straight to the national tennis athletes through their allowance and airfares for international competitions such as the Davis Cup, Asian Games and Sea Games.
For the record, PHILTA is a non-government organization whose operations are privately subsidized by its members and officers, PHILTA employs a meager 3 personnel, and their salaries are not paid for by the government. All the officers of PHILTA do not receive any salary from the government or from the Association (PHILTA). As a National Sports Association (NSA), PHILTA needs a lot of improvement but comparing it to other NSA’s, PHILTA is actually one of the more active NSA’s in the country. This year alone, PHILTA was able to organize 2 Davis Cup events: PHI VS JAPAN and PHI VS UZB. We were also able to send a team to KAZAHSTAN for the PHI VS KAZ Davis Cup Tie, of course with the help of Mr. JEAN HENRI LHUILLIER of CEBUANA LHUILLIER, the PHILIPPINE SPORTS COMMISSION and PHILTA OFFICERS who donated or lent money just to make this event happen.
Also this year, we sent a JUNIOR DAVIS CUP TEAM to compete in INDIA thanks to the support again of Cebuana Lhuillier. PHILTA also sent a team to the Junior Fed Cup in Thailand. PHILTA also organized the 19th edition of the MITSUBISHI INTERNATIONAL JUNIORS. We also hosted an ASIAN 14 AND UNDER SERIES in Subic international tennis center, care of the volunteers from Olongapo. Last November we also hosted 2 legs of ITF WOMENS SATTELITE thanks to PLDT and HOLCIM CEMENT through the intercession of long time tennis supporter Mr. OSCAR HILADO. After the women’s satellite, we also hosted two ITF JUNIOR WORLD RANKING EVENTS care of PHINMA, the company headed by Mr. Hilado. PHILTA also regularly organizes a lot of yearly junior tournaments like the ANDRADA CUP, TRUFLEX NATIONAL AGE GROUP, and many more. Aside from organizing all these events PHILTA also sanctions and awards points to a lot of men’s, women’s, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 under boys and girls events every year. There are a lot of tournaments all year round, as you can see in our updated PHILTA TENNIS CALENDAR.
Going back to the tournament project, I have also asked Mr. Roland Kraut, a fellow Columbiano and a volunteer organizing head of the PCA OPEN, to help me in the organizing committee. He has agreed to volunteer for the project also.
The initial plan is to organize a MENS and WOMENS SINGLES and DOUBLES EVENT, if more money comes in we will make a FULL AGE GROUP EVENT for boys and girls. If the donations really pour in, then we will also make an Interclub Team Tennis and maybe an Interschool Team Tennis, that will be as grand as the PCA OPEN.
In this regard, may we call on everyone’s support for this event and in return we will accord you by placing your name in the tournament honor roll banner.
All for Philippine Tennis!
RANDY VILLANUEVA Philippine Davis Cup Administrator
Note:
Last December 8 2008, I attended the PHILTA NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (NEC) MEETING and I mentioned to them this project that I plan to do, I also asked for support on the project by asking them to award to us the points awarded to the Metro Open a group A event by the Philippine Tennis Association, fortunately the NEC approved my proposal and for the event we will be awarding PHILTA Group A points to the winner, same points awarded to PCA Open winners.
Another development is that this tournament will serve as a very important preparation for our Davis Cup Team for the coming Davis Cup Tie Vs. Hong Kong on March 6, 7 and 8 of 2009.
For inquiries please feel free to call or text Randy at 0917-5282122 or his office number at 721-6379, 721-5188, fax number 722-6435 or look for Loida in PHILTA Office no. 523-6415 or 252-2016.

It states that, these tournament is important as tune up for the up coming Davis tie vs Hongkong on march 6-8. 2009.
I'm 100% against this moved, They should do these two months before in order to form a team and prepare for the coming tie. The Hongkong tie is already next week and they don't have yet a full member of the team. As far as I know, The team member are Nino,Huey(fil-am),Mamiit(?),and the champion of Peoples Tournament. I heard Mamiit not sure to play. They take it for granted. DAVIS CUP is a prestigeous Team competition that you play for your country. In Soccer, It's like WORLD CUP. You play for prestige and pride for your country. As a Filipino, I'm concerned of how they form a team and prepare enough to compete internationally. No training, No Team building and for sure there's no team spirit in which is the important in a team competition. This is not a joke, the tie is next week....hahahahaha No team practice, Team member not yet complete...hahahahaha! Sorry! I've been a little bit hurt of how they prepared to compete for our country.

Upset rash in Metro tennis spacer
By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
Jaime Solon, Marinel Rudas and Ma. Regina Santiago came through with upset victories yesterday in the first Metro Open People’s Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The unseeded Solon shocked sixth pick Arvin Ruel, 6-2, 6-3, to barge into the quarterfinals of this P302,000 tournament presented by Cebuana Lhuillier, Phiten, Le Soleil de Boracay and Just Jewels.
Taking a cue from Solon, Rudas emerged as the biggest winner yesterday as she bumped off women’s singles fourth seed Bien Zoleta, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
Not to be left out of the honor roll, Santiago announced her presence by subduing No. 7 Anna Clarice Patrimonio, 6-0, 6-1. She will have her biggest test today when she meets top seed Bambi Zoleta, who drew a first round bye.
Solon next faces third seed Rolando Ruel Jr., who claimed his Last 8 seat with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 decision over Mico Santiago.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were top seed Johnny Arcilla and second pick Patrick John Tierro.
Arcilla trounced Kim Ivor Saraza, 6-1, 6-1, while Tierro thumped Christian Canlas, 6-1, 6-1.
Arcilla collides with No. 8 Rocky Paglalunan, a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 winner over Pop Sabandon, today.

Yup and she's coming out of injury pa She is already in the semis and scheduled to play this morning. She beat Clarice Patrimonio in the 2nd round 6-0,6-1 and also a winner over Bambi Zoleta the top seed and defending PCA champ 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarters. Reggie is using Tecnifibre Tfight 295 rackets and Tecnifibre ProRedCode strings She will possibly face Christine Patrimonio, who is also using Tecnifibre ProRedCode strings, in the finals if they both win their respective Semifinal games. Cheers

I saw in ITF davis cup draw. Philippines nominated Mamiit, Huey, Alcantara and Arcilla. The Tournament is on going if PJ Tierro wins the tournament. Malaking problema siguro eto?

Hmmm bakit unfair? Its not bro, actually Davis Cup member si PJ last year, kaso medyo pangit ang laro nya eh. If you notice all his game, medyo kinakain sya eh. Versus Japan, he lost, versus Kazakhstan at Uzbekistan he lost pa din. So ala talaga sya panalo sa singles bro. Pero sa UAAP grabe champion sila. Even PCA, tinalo pa din sya ni Johnny. Lets see kung makaganti sya sa Metro Open. Well kung mag champ man si Tierro, lets see kung kayanin nya mga laro nya sa Davis Cup, sana naman kayanin nya na un no Group 2 lang un... Thats why they have the Metro Open, kung sino mag champ pasok agad sa Davis CUP, magandang idea un at least nabibigyan ng pagkakataon ang iba. Who knows di ba.

In my opinion bro, di talaga natin kaya pag ala FilAm, that's why pinilit nila kunin ulit si Mamiit although ayaw na ni Mamiit napakiusapan lang ata at may kapalit daw un based on the news. Kailangan kasi tlaga international exposure, ewan ko ba pero ibang iba yata talaga laro don. Right now for Casey, since he always compete outside the country, malaki future nya sa Davis Cup.

Sir SLP, Nabasa ko sa newspaper kanina. Wala ata sa list si Arcilla. Yung mananalo daw sa tournament ang kukunin for the 4th spot sa team. Kung nasa ITF draw nga si arcilla, magulo nga.
