It has always been confusing to learn the grip when I read instructions or hear people tell me to use this grip or that grip.  I found this link in the web below and so far it's the most comprehensive description of all the grips you can ever use in your tennis game.

http://www.tennis.com/yourgame/gear/general/general.aspx?id=649

http://www.tennis.com/articles/templates/instruction.aspx?articleid=1337&zoneid=16

Kayo, what grip do you use on what type of shot?

- I use continental grip on the following shots: volley (both sides, backhand and forehand), slice backhand, overheads and I sometimes use it on my serve.
- I use eastern backhand grip when I do topspin backhand ground stroke (I play single handed backhand). I also use it on my serve more often than continental.
- Most of the time my forehand groundstrokes are hit using a semi-western grip.

Serve, Overheads, Volleys, Slice(FH and BH) = Continental
Forehand = Extreme Semi-Western (in between semi and full)(dating eastern ako)
Backhand = Extreme Eastern, Eastern

The Overhead Smash by Roger Federer

« Reply #8 on: January 07, 2009, 09:14:55 AM »

For me...Continental is my HOME grip, but has to change depending on the shots...

Forehand: It depends.  Generally Continental, but the higher I have to hit the ball the more Western it becomes

Backhand (topspin): I have same backhand as Federer so its Eastern, but I like to call it the Motorcycle grip.

Backhand (slice): It's difficult to change grips on extremely angled or emergency shots to the backhand so I just keep the same grip as the forehand, Continental.

Serve, volley, smash: usually Continental

The Hawaiian grip is rarely used, but it had a moment in the spotlight when Alberto Berasategui used it to make the 1994 finals at Roland Garros, where he lost to Sergi Bruguera. One way to find the grip is to place your hand in a Continental position, then twist your wrist and forearm 180 degrees clockwise so that your knuckles are facing forward

Ei Jov, eventually matututunan mo tlaga magchange grip. Ganyan din ako dati iisa lng grip. Pero once matuto k magchange grip mas magaan ang twisting ng torso hindi ipit mga muscles mo.

Pero mikki ayos ha, nag va-vary ang grip mo depending sa surface.

You guys can score but I can do more!

« Reply #45 on: May 10, 2009, 09:51:16 PM »

Hi guys!

The western grip originated on the high-bouncing hard-courts of the Western United States.  The biggest drawback of the western grip is that it closes the racquet face before contact, and can be awkward returning low balls.  It also requires a big grip change when going from the forehand to the backhand, and makes it extremely difficult to hit the driving passing shot.

However, it is an excellent grip for hitting high balls using topspin, and for generating immense racquet-head speed.  Before Rafael Nadal put this grip in the spotlight of modern tennis, other players such as Thomas Muster, Sergi Bruguera and Alberto Berasategui all successfully used the same full western grip.

It is important to point out some of the strengths a player must have in order to use the full western grip effectively:

1. Excellent movement
2. Tremendous lower body strength
3. The ability to play long points to wear down opponents
4. A ridiculously strong wrist
5. Fantastic timing

This is a summarized article by Nick Bollettieri from this month's issue of Australian Tennis Magazine entitled "Nadal does it...why can't I?"  Smiley

Cheers to all!

I can't answer yes or no agad-agad sa tanong na ito. case-to-case basis kasi ito.

in most cases, slice backhand is executed with a continental grip. you change grip not unless you are already at continental grip. so, it is a yes or no, depende kung ano ang hawak mo sa raketa before you execute the shot.

in most case, when i am receiving, continental na ang hawak ko. so when i have to execute a slice backhand, i don't have to change grip anymore. in this case, yes ang sagot sa tanong mo.

consider also that not everyone uses continental grip to execute this shot. RSP is one example.
