Andrada Cup AG Tennis Championships (Manila Bulletin)

SHANINE OLIVAREZ came through with impresive victories yesterday to keep her double title bid going in the 18th Andrada Cup AgeGroup Tennis Championships yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 13-year-old Olivarez, youngest daughter of former Parañaque City Mayor and Philta President Pablo Olivarez, started her blitz into two finals berths with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tamitha Nguyen in the 14-under semifinals where she is seeded third.

Olivarez returned in the afternoon and reeled in her biggest catch — girls’ 16-under top seed Sarah Jane Lim — with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision.

Olivarez tries to complete her double title drive today when she battles top seed Martina Guba in the 14-under finals and fifth seed Ma. Regina Santiago in the 16-under championships.

Guba made the 14-under finals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over fourth seed Jasmine Tan Ho but failed in her own bid for a double finals appearance when blisters forced her to abandon her 16-under semis match against Santiago, who trailed, 2-3, in the second set after a 6-3 first set win.

In the girls’ 12-under class, fourth seed Crizzabelle Paulino of Olongapo City ousted top seed Akiko de Guzman, 6-4, 6-2, to advance in the finals against unseeded Marian Jade Capadocia of Kalibo, Aklan, who prevailed over Cristabelle Paulino, 6-2, 6-0.

Unseeded Regina Santiago clobbered Mary Grace Rivero, 6-1, 6-1, to earn a championship berth in the girls’ 18-under division. Santiago will meet the winner between top seed Trudy Amoranto and unseeded Sarah Jane Lim.

Meanwhile, third seed Kim Ivor Saraza pulled off a 6-4, 6-4 upset win over top seed Akio Sy to reach the boys’ 16-under category in this tournament supported by Dunlop and the Philippine Sports Commission. Sy will face the winner between No. 2 Juan Fidel Regis and No. 8 Jose Lorenzo Ferrer.

In the boys’ 14-under division, second seed Leander Lazaro defeated fourth seed Dheo Talatayod, 6-1, 6-4, to arrange a title duel with Kyle Cordero, who walked over third seed Alberto Villamor.

Boys’ 12-under top seed Jacob Lagman of Cebu City stamped his class over third seed Juan Alfonso Opulencia, 6-1, 6-2, to advance in the finals against unseeded Jurence Mendoza, who won by default over Vince Salas.

In the unisex 10-under division, third seed Vince Mark Tabotabo of Cebu stunned top seed Vince Salas, 6-0, 6-3, to forge a championship showdown with second seed Eric Olivarez Jr., who scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Isabela Orteza.

THE long line of tennis champions runs through Shanine Olivarez’s veins.

She left no doubt about it yesterday after pulling the rug from under top-seeded Sarah Jane Lim, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to barge into the girls 16-under finals of the 18th Andrada Cup age-group championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The youngest daughter of former Philippine Lawn Tennis Association chief and former Paranaque mayor Pablo Olivarez, and sister to Southeast Asian Games champ Eva, Shanine shocked everybody with her steely nerves to turn back the tournament favorite.

Shanine will fight for the title against fifth-seeded Maria Regina Santiago, who bundled out second seed Martina Guba, 6-3, 2-0, after Guba suffered blisters on her feet.

The 13-year-old Olivarez, studying at the Brent International School, had earlier made the 14-under finals after a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over No. 8 Tamitha Nguyen. She will face Guba in that category after a 6-3, 6-2 semifinal win over fourth seed Jasmine Tan Ho.

“I’m happy to be in the finals and I hope to do my best to win,” said the youngster who came to the tournament unseeded.

Fourth seed Crizzabelle Paulino of Olongapo City stunned top seed Akiko de Guzman, 6-4, 6-2, to advance in the 12-under finals against unseeded Marian Jade Capadocia of Kalibo, Aklan.

Capadocia prevailed over Cristabelle Paulino, 6-2, 6-0.

Santiago also made it to the 18-under division final after besting Mary Grace Rivero, 6-1, 6-1. She will face the winner of the other semifinal between top seed Trudy Amoranto and unseeded Sarah Jane Lim.

Santiago, 16, carries more experience over Olivarez, but the younger netter is expected to flash the courage under fire that enabled her to overhaul the first-set setback against the top seed yesterday.

In the boy’s division, fourth seed Akio Sy routed No. 6 Marlo Espedido, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the 18-under finals against unseeded John Francis Largo, who made it after two walkovers.

Third seed Kim Ivor Saraza eliminated top seed Akio Sy, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the boys’ 16-under category earning a shot at the title against No. 8 Jose Lorenzo Ferrer, who won over second seed Juan Fidel Regis, 6-3, 6-2.

In the boys’ 14-under division, second seed Leander Lazaro trounced fourth seed Dheo Talatayod, 6-1, 6-4, to arrange a title duel with Kyle Cordero, who walked over third seed Alberto Villamor.

Boys’ 12-under top seed Jacob Lagman of Cebu City beat third seed Juan Alfonso Opulencia, 6-1, 6-2, to forge a title duel against unseeded Jurence Mendoza, who won by default over Vince Salas.

In the unisex 10-under division, third seed Vince Mark Tabotabo of Cebu ripped top seed Vince Salas, 6-0, 6-3, to make the championship match. He will take on second seed Eric livarez Jr., who scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Isabela Orteza.

THE YOUNG turks of local tennis are finally making their presence felt.

Palarong Pambansa champion Kyle Cordero and unseeded Shanine Olivarez both made a strong impression yesterday after beating their foes and ruling their respective divisions in the 18th Andrada Cup age-group championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 13-year-old Cordero bested second seed Leander Lazaro, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0, to clinch the 14-under championship, his third title in a row.

Olivarez, sister of former national players Eva and Edna Olivarez, nailed the 16-under crown after fifth seed Regina Santiago defaulted the final due to exhaustion.

It was an anti-climatic first title victory for the 13-year-old Olivarez, who created a stir on Saturday by bundling out top seed Sarah Jane Lim in the semifinals.

Santiago, nevertheless, went home with the 18-under title after outlasting top seed Trudy Amoranto, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, in just over three hours.

Olivarez later fell to top seed Martina Guba, 6-1, 6-4, in the 14-under final, even as unseeded Marian Jane Capadocia took home the 12-under title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Crizzable Paulino.

The power-hitting Cordero also won the Head Penn Baguio leg and the Palaro elementary single gold medal in Naga City last year.

The Grade 7 student at Colegio San Agustin, however, admitted to getting physically drained in the second set which he yielded to Lazaro.

“I got tired in the second set and Leander took advantage of it,” said Cordero. “But I was able to regain my form quickly in the third set and was in complete control of the match.”

John Francis Largo, Kim Ivor Saraza, Jacob Lagman and Vince Mark Tabotabo also topped their respective categories in this tournament held in honor of former longtime Philippine Tennis Association president Salvador Andrada.

The unseeded Largo ruled the boys’ 18-under title after a 6-2, 6-3 shocker over fourth seed Akio Sy, while the third-seeded Saraza whipped No. 8 Jose Lorenzo Ferrer, 6-0, 6-2, for the boys’ 16-under crown.

Boys’ 12-under top seed Lagman, a Grade 5 student at the St. Benedict Childhood Education Centre, bested No. 5 Jurence Mendoza, 6-4, 6-0, for his fifth straight title, while the third-seeded Tabotabo took the unisex 10-under championship over second seed Eric Olivarez Jr.

Hi SLP!  Are you still in Manila?  Sana you can stay longer.  Actually, my daughter played vs. Capadocia  in the 14 and under at the round of 16 in the Andrada Cup.  Congrats to her for winning the 12 and under title.  Any chance you can join us in case we play at San Juanico?  Dondi is sending his best regards.  He had a great time playing with you.
