Hi all!  In my opinion (I could be wrong), if we bombard channel 23 or ABC 5 with emails/letters asking them to televise the UAAP tennis matches, they might consider it.   Once the TV networks become aware that there is viewership, they might televise the matches like college basketball.  If we can build a critical mass of viewers, the networks will actually fight over the rights to air the games.

One of the things that disappoints me about UAAP tennis is the attendance. I decided to watch the matches this year because I have a couple of students in the team. But alas, only a handful of people show up. Last Sunday in the UP UST tie, the supporters of the two teams, composed of the rest of the team, parents and friends, was cheerfully noisy and animated. But the Ateneo - UE tie was pathetically silent. Nakaka-awa ang mga team. No cheering, no spectacle, and yet the play was rather fierce. This is why I've been posting updates here, in the UP discussion group, Peyups.com, and the UPDTC e-group. It doens't matter which school you come from, or if you don't come from any of the schools. Its a pity. So much good, free, fiercely contested tennis, and noone is watching. :-(

I agree. It's a sad commentary about Philippine Tennis. It's a beautiful sports for the Filipinosl and yet the passion is not there.

There are lots of thing to be considered to make UAAP tennis more lively and interesting. Just one example, watch on march 3 match between NCAA selections versus Kobe Gakuin University and you will witness the basic problem.

Micah Valenzuela
Regina Bunsod
Sab Soriano
Tetil Gulosino
Tiara Guadayo

UP Ladies Team won over Ateneo last Sunday --- 3-2. It was decided by the 5th match Singles between Sab Soriano and Ms (didn't get her first name) Araneta in a very exciting match. Araneta was leading 6-0, 5-2 in the first and second sets but Sab Soriano was able to overtake the Ateneo player in the 2nd set at 7-5 for the deciding third set. Sab took the 3rd set at 6-1 to give seal UP's victory. UP is being coached by Davis Cupper Mike Mora and assisted by Davis Cup Coach Butch Bacani.
BTW, Sab Soriano is my eldest daughter. Smiley

UST has good line-up is favored to win but UP can foist a possible upset.

Next game is on Saturday (starting at 8 a.m.) January 27. Please come and watch.

Were you there? I was the one walking around with a manual SLR  and a long lens. I arrived just in time for the start of Sab's match. I think she won 11 straight games starting when she was down 1-5 in the second set. Our voices were already hoarse when the mens matches started.

The mens matches were quite exciting too. In the first singles, OJ got cramps in the second set but bravely fought on, then his UST opponent got cramps while serving for the match. UST won that match in 3 sets. Later that afternoon, the same UST player was carried out of Rizal and brought to the hospital. Word is "umakyat ang cramps niya", whatever that means. Talk about taking it for the team. UST is now keeping everyone guessing whether that player will be back for the second round.

Please check the schedule I posted. I got it from Coach Ariel's copy of the UAAP schedule memo. AFAIK, the second round for both mens and ladies starts on Sunday, 28 January.

It sounds interesting 0-6,2-5 down then cameback to clinch the tie. For sure, she will never forget it until she gets old. If I'm the coach I'll give her presents.

Hi Makinao!  Many many thanks for the updates!  Any pics?  I was thinking we have a few literary artists here at PTO.  Perhaps, we can feed them with info on the games?   You can likewise choose a few promising players and we can interview them and publish the transcripts here.   It will be nice if we can also publish their pictures here (with their permission of course).  Here are some of the questions which comes to mind:

Name:
School represented:
Racket:
Plays left handed or right handed?
Height:

1)  At what age did you start playing tennis?
2)  Who or what inspired you to play tennis?
3)  Why did you choose tennis over other sports i.e. volleyball, badminton, etc.?
4)  What are your plans as far as playing tennis is concerned?
5)  What can you share to other aspiring tennis players?
6)  As a tennis player/enthusiast, how can you contribute in promoting the sport of tennis here in the Philippines?
7)  What do you enjoy the most in playing tennis?

Thanks again!!!!

I can try to do that for the UP team, kasi they hang out in the club every afternoon. Is anyone here with any of the other schools?

It was nail-biting tennis at its best at the UAAP yesterday. The physiotherapist support for both teams got a real workout, with full body cramps, and assorted aches and pains affecting both teams. At times it was brutal.

When the smoke cleared, UST won the tie, and the championship by virtue of a sweep. UP was 1st runner up. I think I saw some media people, so hopefully there might be some little article somewhere in the papers.

 UST sweeps tennis crowns
(From Philippine Journal Online)

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas  completed a title sweep in men’s and women’s tennis to underscore its bid to keep the general championship in UAAP Season 69.

UST blanked University of the Philippines at the close of the men’s eliminations Sunday to complete the title sweep, a feat duplicated by its women’s team which closed out the season with a 4-0 shutout also of UP in the tennis competitions staged at the Rizal Racket Club in Pasig City.

“This year’s twin championship was a big surprise for me because almost all my players are rookies,” said Tigers coach Karl Santamaria. “I kept challenging my players to work hard and motivated them to overcome their lack of experience. And I’m glad that they responded. This is my best coaching stint with UST.”

James Cañete beat league veteran Nathaniel Guadayao, 7-6, 5-7, 6-5 (retired) in the first singles. Wilbur Orillano and Alexander Diego followed it up with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Jeremiah Sison and James Pang for a 2-0 lead before they became unreachable with Ryan Repunte hacking out a hard-earned 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 win over Eufracio Dimayuga in the other singles match.
