For a change, RP netters beat visitors
(From Manila Bulletin Online)

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon overcame their respective foreign rivals yesterday to storm into the quarterfinals of the Phinma International Juniors Circuit Week 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis courts.

The ITF ranked No. 39 Alcantara survived the gritty plays of hard-hitting Korean Chung Hong, 7-6 (2), 6-2, while wild card Patrombon, recovered from a first set loss to beat China’s Du Bai Dong, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Alcantara, who outlasted Chung in one hour and 30 minutes, will next face Croatian Josip Mesin, who ousted local netter Leander Lazaro, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Patrombon, still fresh from winning the ITF Junior Championship in Singapore last week, will meet Korean Na Jung-woong, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Japanese Ryoto Tachi, in the next round.

Anna Clarice Patrimonio, another wildcard entry, also stood her ground, winning the first set, 7-6 (1), before she forced Kriszina Kapitany of Hungary to retire due to cramps.

Patrimonio, daughter of former PBA superstar Alvin Patrimonio, was trailing 2-5 in the opening frame, but rallied mightily with her solid forehands to prevail.

Patrimonio, who turned 15 last Tuesday, is expected to have a tougher match ahead with eighth seed Kobkanok Upapong of Thailand, who tripped Taiwanese Tsao Fang-Chi, 6-3, 7-5.

The 16-year-old Alcantara mixed his shots well to slow down Chung’s power game.

"Mabigat siyang kalaban. Solid yung baseline niya. Nag-adjust na lang ako sa mga palo ko sa second game para manalo," Alcantara, a pride of Xavier University in Cagayan De Oro, said.

Not as fortunate as Alcantara were Anna Christine Patrimonio, Romar Hernandez and Joshua Tan Ho, who were shown the door by seeded foes.

Anna Christine, the elder sister of Anna Clarise, lost to fourth seed Alisa Ogordova of Uzbekistan, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 while Hernandez was beaten by fourth seed Omar Elkheshen of Egypt, 6-1, 6-1, and Tan Ho bruised his knees en route a 6-2, 6-3 loss to No. 7 Motoaki Kita.

The 16-year-old Patrimonio fought five match points but the Uzbek, who is recovering from cramps, unleashed a powerful double-handed backhand to win the game after a two-hour, 30-minute action.

Taiwanese Lee Hua-chen and Chinese Dong Xiaorong delivered the surprises of the day when they dispatched their seeded rivals.

Lee overcame a second-set loss to stun second pick Prang Pantusart of Thailand, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, while Dong trounced sixth seed Japanese Shoko Yamamoto, 6-0, 6-3.

Hoping for positive results from Filipino netters!  If you have time, come and support them.   Games are ongoing at the Rizal Memorial.  Medyo ma-traffic lang going there dahil ang daming hukay/construction work! Angry Angry Angry

Patrimonios in quarterfinals
(From Manila Bulletin Online)

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

Sisters Anna Clarice and Anna Christine Patrimonio shocked fancied rivals yesterday to continue sparkling in the Phinma International Juniors Circuit Week 2 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis courts.

The 15-year-old Anna Clarice fought her way up from a first set loss to boot out fifth seed Stefanie Tan of Singapore, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, to lead the run of reversals that marked the event’s Last 16.

The 16-year-old Anna Christine, also a wildcard holder, disposed of Lee Hua-chen of Taiwan, 6-3, 6-3, to join her younger sister in the quarterfinals and eclipse her Week 1 performance.

The Patrimonios go through another day of tough test today when they vie for seats in the semifinals.

Anna Clarice will face Week 1 winner Yang Zhaoxuan of China, who toppled second seed Prang Pantusart of Thailand, 7-5, 6-4.

Anna Christine, who turns 17 this month, clashes with British Danieka Borthwick, who ousted No. 7 Japanese Shoko Yamamoto, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, rising netter Jeson Patrombom kept the Philippine flag flying in the boys’ division by routing Japanese Kaichi Uchida, 6-3, 6-3.

Patrombon will duel 6-foot-4 Croatian Josip Mesin, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over second pick Thai Chanon Varapongsittikul, in the Last 8.

Filipino qualifier Romar Hernandez, however, was shown the door by top seed Ahmed El Menshawy of Great Britain, 6-1, 6-0.

Akio Sy, Leander Lazaro, Kim Ivor Saraza and Joshua Ho failed to make it past the first round late Tuesday.

Sy lost to Korean Chung Hong, 1-6, 4-6; Lazaro was beaten by Chinese Lin Kai-jie, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-4; Saraza was defeated by Liang Wen-Yau of Taiwan, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-1; and Ho bowed to Thailand’s Kriangkrai Prajoubphansri, 2-6, 5-7.

Anna Christine fought off Lee’s baseline attacks to slowly win games en route to the Final 8.

"It’s becoming a mental game for me kasi ilang weeks na rin akong naglalaro," said Anna Christine, who just came from a three-year training in Valencia, Spain last October.

While Anna Christine needed only two sets to claim the win, Anna Clarice had to survive long rallies with Tan, a Week 1 quarterfinalist, in the second and third sets, winning the second with service breaks in the second and eighth games and then taking the decider with three straight games from a 3-4 deficit.
