For a change, RP netters beat visitors (From Manila Bulletin Online)
By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon overcame their respective foreign rivals yesterday to storm into the quarterfinals of the Phinma International Juniors Circuit Week 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis courts.
The ITF ranked No. 39 Alcantara survived the gritty plays of hard-hitting Korean Chung Hong, 7-6 (2), 6-2, while wild card Patrombon, recovered from a first set loss to beat China’s Du Bai Dong, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Alcantara, who outlasted Chung in one hour and 30 minutes, will next face Croatian Josip Mesin, who ousted local netter Leander Lazaro, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Patrombon, still fresh from winning the ITF Junior Championship in Singapore last week, will meet Korean Na Jung-woong, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Japanese Ryoto Tachi, in the next round.
Anna Clarice Patrimonio, another wildcard entry, also stood her ground, winning the first set, 7-6 (1), before she forced Kriszina Kapitany of Hungary to retire due to cramps.
Patrimonio, daughter of former PBA superstar Alvin Patrimonio, was trailing 2-5 in the opening frame, but rallied mightily with her solid forehands to prevail.
Patrimonio, who turned 15 last Tuesday, is expected to have a tougher match ahead with eighth seed Kobkanok Upapong of Thailand, who tripped Taiwanese Tsao Fang-Chi, 6-3, 7-5.
The 16-year-old Alcantara mixed his shots well to slow down Chung’s power game.
"Mabigat siyang kalaban. Solid yung baseline niya. Nag-adjust na lang ako sa mga palo ko sa second game para manalo," Alcantara, a pride of Xavier University in Cagayan De Oro, said.
Not as fortunate as Alcantara were Anna Christine Patrimonio, Romar Hernandez and Joshua Tan Ho, who were shown the door by seeded foes.
Anna Christine, the elder sister of Anna Clarise, lost to fourth seed Alisa Ogordova of Uzbekistan, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 while Hernandez was beaten by fourth seed Omar Elkheshen of Egypt, 6-1, 6-1, and Tan Ho bruised his knees en route a 6-2, 6-3 loss to No. 7 Motoaki Kita.
The 16-year-old Patrimonio fought five match points but the Uzbek, who is recovering from cramps, unleashed a powerful double-handed backhand to win the game after a two-hour, 30-minute action.
Taiwanese Lee Hua-chen and Chinese Dong Xiaorong delivered the surprises of the day when they dispatched their seeded rivals.
Lee overcame a second-set loss to stun second pick Prang Pantusart of Thailand, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, while Dong trounced sixth seed Japanese Shoko Yamamoto, 6-0, 6-3.
