Top women seeds advance (From Manila Bulletin Online)

By Kristel Satumbaga

Defending champion Czarina Mae Arevalo and top pick Bambi Zoleta expectedly cruised to the next round by dumping their little-known foes yesterday in the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open at the PCA shellcourts in Paco, Manila.

The 22-year-old Arevalo, seeded third, clobbered Nikki De Dios, 6-0, 6-1, while Zoleta, the country’s top female junior campaigner, thumped Alyssa Calejo, 6-2, 6-2.

Arevalo’s triumph earned her a second-round date with Jennelyn Magpayo, who downed Enah Kawabata, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Zoleta, for her part, arranged what is expected to be an interesting showdown with Jasmine Tan Ho, a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Ivy De Castro.

Sharing the limelight with Arevalo and Zoleta are sisters Anna Christine and Anna Clarice Patrimonio.

Anna Christine dumped Shirley Valler, 6-0, 6-1, while younger sister Anna Clarice tripped Enah Baba, 6-1, 6-3.

The elder Patrimonio will face next eighth pick Jessica-Marie Agra, who won via a default against Regina Santiago while Anna collides with No. 7 Trudygine Amoranto, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Akiko De Guzman.

Also advancing to the next round were second seed Michelle Pang, fourth pick Aileen Rogan and Shannin Olivarez.

Pang crushed qualifier Macy Solon, 6-0, 6-2, Rogan downed Patricia Orteza, 6-0, 6-1 and Olivarez beat Sherry Rose Ong, 6-3, 6-1.

In the next round, Pang faces Lenlen Santos, a 7-6 (Cool, 6-1 winner over Chika Yasuda while Rogan takes on qualifier Nikki Manalo, who tripped Ami Fukui, 6-4, 6-1.

The other winners were Thassha Vitayviroj who beat Tracy Santos and Tamitha Nguyen who trounced lucky loser Angel Wegmann, 6-1, 6-3.

Meantime, men’s singles action resumes today with top seed Patrick John Tierro and defending champion Johnny Arcilla going for another easy wins following what appeared to be warm-up matched in the first round two days back.

The 17-year-old Zoleta pounced on her rival’s numerous errors to stay on track for her first major title as she also struggled in the early going.

"Sabog ‘yung laro ko, ang pangit. Wala kasi akong practice the past days. Nakaka-score lang ako dahil sa mga errors niya," said Zoleta, a semifinalist in the event last year.

Zoleta hopes she can raise her game against Tan Ho, who she considered to be a dangerous opponent.

She already beat Tan Ho once but she expects a tough showdown this time.

"Kailangan talaga makuha ko ’yung usual game ko para manalo ako. Medyo nape-pressure ako dahil mataas ang expectations ng mga tao sa mga top seeds pero sana ma-overcome ko rin ito kaagad para hindi maapektuhan ang laro ko," Zoleta said.

Tierro teaches coach a lesson
(From Manila Bulletin Online)

By Kristel Satumbaga

Top seed Patrick John Tierro showed little mercy for Chris Cuarto, his two-year coach, during his 6-2, 6-3 win yesterday in the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open tennis championships at the PCA indoor courts in Paco, Manila.

Tierro, 22, did not drop his serve while breaking Cuarto thrice in advancing to the quarterfinals against fifth seed Elbert Anasta, a 7-5, 6-0 winner over qualifier Michael Mantua.

"Magaling at fit pa rin si coach. Alam niya ang weaknesses ko," said Tierro, who campaigned with Cuarto in the Davis Cup in Kazakhstan last September. "Na-overpower ko lang siya siguro dahil mas fit ako sa kanya," he added.

After being broken twice in the first set, the 30-year-old Cuarto managed to stay with Tierro in the first six games of the second set before wilting under Tierro’s heavy groundstrokes.

Gracious in defeat, Cuarto said Tierro has improved tremendously since the SEA Games last year.

"Basta mas maging kumpiyansa lang siya sa service games niya. It’s his heart and soul. Once he starts serving well, everything follows. He’s a great player," Cuarto said.

Reigning titlists Johnny Arcilla and Czarina Mae Arevalo also bolstered their respective title bids with easy wins against little-known foes.

Arcilla, a three-time champion and seeded second, walloped Mico Santiago, 6-2, 6-1, while third-seeded Arevalo crushed Jennelyn Magpayo, 6-1, 6-0.

Arcilla clashes with the winner between No. 7 Alexander Lazaro and Hiroki Katoh, while Arevalo collides with either Bien Zoleta or Shannin Olivarez.

Women’s top pick Bambi Zoleta also cruised in the Final 8 with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Jasmine Tan Ho. She will meet the winner between Anna Christine Patrimonio and Trudygine Amoranto.

Second seed Michelle Pang, fourth pick Aileen Rogan and Thassha Vitayviroj likewise advanced.

Pang trounced qualifier Len Len Santos, 6-1, 6-0, Rogan escaped past Nikki Manalo, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 and Vitayviroj downed Nguyen Tamitha, 7-6 (3), 6-1.

Coyiuto wins PCA jr title
(From Manila Bulletin Online)

Second seed Samantha Coyiuto topped the 14-under division in the 2008 PCA Tennis Open Juniors presented by the Cebuana Lhuillier at the PCA indoor court.

Coyiuto, a high school freshman, rallied past third seed Akiko de Guzman 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to retain the girls’ championship title.

Armed with a solid forehand, Coyiuto raced to a third seed lead to wrap up the match in more than two hours.

"We both played well. I just got better in the third set," the 14-year-old Coyiuto said after winning her second PCA championship title.

Coyiuto is sponsored by Head and uses Head Microgel racquet.

She trains under veteran coach Bubut Nalus.

Even national coach Ronald Kraut was impressed with Coyiuto’s performance.

"She has big potential. She has the qualities of a good player. Given more training, she can be one of the country’s top players," Kraut, chair of the PCA Open organizing committee, said.

The event is supported by Cebuana Lhuillier, Pagcor, Hewlett Packard, Universal Paint, UNTV Sports 37 and Philippine Star.
