2 more RP netters ousted (from Manila Bulletin Online)

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

The woes of Filipino netters in the singles event continued as wild card entries Bambi Zoleta and Michelle Pang were overpowered by their respective rivals at the start of the Holcim-ITF Women’s Circuit Week 1 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis courts.

First to fall was Zoleta, who lost 6-3, 6-4 to a tall and experienced Aussie rival in Cassandra Barr.

Pang followed suit as she fell to seventh seed Qui Si-si of Taiwan, 6-4, 6-1.

With the defeats of Zoleta and Pang, only Jessica-Marie Agra is left to carry the fight for the country.

Agra, also a wild card entry who drew an opening day bye, also faces a daunting task to advance to the next round as she will go up against Chinese Liu Chang.

The same fate visited the country’s doubles teams as sisters Anna Christine and Anna Clarice Patrimonio bowed to top seed Jessy Rompies and Lavinia Tananta of Indonesia, 6-1, 6-1.

Less than an hour later after her singles defeat, Zoleta and Chinese partner Liu Min fell short over Marina Novak of Leitchenstein and Chutharat Rungtein of Thailand, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.

Ma. Regina Santiago and Marinel Rudas took the hardest beating as they were blanked by Ayu-fani Damayanti of Indonesia and Alisa Ogorodova of Uzbekistan, 6-0, 6-0.

Korean Kang Seo-kyung stole the day’s limelight after scoring a stunning 6-4, 6-0 win over third seed Mguyen Thuy-dung.

Kang's victory set her up a second round date with Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, who trounced Sophia Mulsap of Thailand, 6-3, 6-4.

Zoleta admitted that foreign bets are much tougher and stronger this time.

"Malakas talaga. ’Yung kalaban ko, malakas sa lahat ng bagay, sa service, forehand, backhand... Mahirap makaporma," said the 17-year-old Zoleta.

"Talagang pinakain ako ng bola," she added in jest.

Also barging into the next phase were second seed Lu jia-jing, who survived past qualifier Yang Yi, 6-4, 7-6 (3); qualifier Juan Ting-fei of Taiwan, edged Lu Jia Xiang of China, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (3); and Malaysia’s Jawairiah Noordin, who ousted Karolina Kostro of Poland, 6-0, 6-1.

absolutely Senyor Addie!  I passed by RMTC this lunch time and learned that the remaining Phil. player in the hunt lost today in singles and in doubles.  Super tie-break daw yung sa doubles match so it was pretty close.  Hopefully, we'll have a better showing sa circuit 2 next week.  Hope those who are available can watch the games and show support plus lots of dasal!
